hermannm
Does anyone know what temperature the cooling fans are supposed to turn on at? Preferably in celcius . I know the fans is supposed to come on when the a/c is turned on. Which one the primary or secondary. My car seems to get extremely hot when idling in trafic. It never overheats but it does get close to that point before the temperature drops. Once the car is moving it is fine and stays at about 95. ruktosk
If you're talking about a 92 Cutlass with a 3.1... http://www.w-body.com/showthread.php/39491-Cooling-fans-won-t-come-on The last post in that thread seems to indicate that on the 3.1, the primary fan kicks on at 195F (95.5C) and the secondary fan kicks on at around 210F (98.8C) or when the A/C is commanded. Crazy K
The turn on temps are more like: A/C off 1: 215 2: 230 A/C on 1: 210 2: 220 but this is just an close approximation.
Jssuper
The turn on temps are more like: A/C off 1: 215 2: 230 A/C on 1: 210 2: 220 but this is just an close approximation. I think my 3100 Century fans keep it cooler than that with a/c on. A/C keeps it cooler than non and that just plain bugs me. I even asked the Buick dealer if they could re-flash the computer or re-program in some way that turns the fans on sooner when a/c is off.. The Technitian and service writer's response was very subtle and VERY informative.. "No!" And nothing more.. Very nice folks at dealer service departments. I havn't found one yet that I like. AL
Well I know on my GP, that if the AC is one, so are the fans, even on a cold start
Highmilagecutlass
I have a similar problem that I have been chasing down. One of my cooling fans was not working and I traced that down to a wire on the bottom of my fuse box that triggered the relay. Also a new thermostat with a new radiator cap. And the condenser and the radiator core was plugged with some kind of debris that I had to clean with a low pressure blow gun and a garden hose. Things are somewhat better now but still on the freeway things are nice until I idle in traffic and the temp gauge starts to climb until the fans kick on. A word of caution..don't let your trans fluid over heat ..I installed a trans cooler inline with the radiator and that alone gives my some peace of mind.. RobertISaar
for a 92 3.1, straight from the BIN(in *F, someone else do the conversion): Fan 1 On: 226 Fan 1 Off: 219 Fan 1 On w/ A/C: 223 Fan 1 Off w/ A/C: 215 Fan 2 On: 235 Fan 2 Off: 229 Fan 2 On w/ A/C: 235 Fan 2 Off w/ A/C: 229 A/C Pressure can also control fan on/off operation, if it rises too high, the fan(s) stay on regardless of coolant temp. it looks like 51 PSI will trigger fan 1, and 63PSI will trigger fan 2, then you have to drop below 41(fan 1) or 51(fan 2) to get them to kick off.
