DavidHowell3633
My son's car has been parked since May since he got a "new ride". It's been too hot to tinker with it and get it sellable. I was going to pull it into the garage today to give us more room in the driveway. Lo and behold, putting the trans into any gear does absolutely nothing. Just prior to May time frame, my son reported that the trans did not want to shift out of 1 or 2 at times. When I drove it, it seemed ok. The oil level is good and fluid appears to retain its color. It has always run with a cooler as long as we've owned the car. In fact, I thought the trans was the best thing about the car- until today. I looked at the vacuum connections and tested the easier ones and they're ok. My assumption is that seals have shrunk and pumps can't pump. I have been impressed with GM's Transmission Sealer and Conditioner since it fixed my lag times for reverse kicking in with my 94 CS convertible. I am thinking of pouring some in and running it in gear while idling and crossing my fingers. Any suggestions as to where to look or what might be wrong? Thanks, David
tornado_735
I'd say drop the pan and do a fluid and filter change. It's not too hard of a job at all, and is more messy than anything.
DavidHowell3633
Thanks. Changed fluid and filter about 15,000 ago.
tornado_735
Thanks. Changed fluid and filter about 15,000 ago. Well shit. Some people would advocate doing it again since a pan drop only nets about 60% of the fluid, but I'm not so sure.
AL
If you are going to let it idle in gear, PLEASE make sure someone is in it and can hit the brakes if necessary... Good luck!

DavidHowell3633
The parking brake works fine as does everything else, EXCEPT the transmission. Thanks everyone for insight into the parking brake issue. I learned something new.
Crazy K
jack up and raise one of the front tires. place car in gear. no load may allow the transmission to kick and engage... and once lowered it may move under it's own power. REALLY. additional thought: fluid level, check the level with the car off(assuming it hasn't run all day). it should be high. start car. if the fluid level did not drop, there is no pumping going on, as parts of the transmission will fill with fluid only with the engine running. BXX
Unplug the trans connector and plug it back on. Loose connection there will piss the trans off pretty bad.
DavidHowell3633
Will try that first. Thanks. Can't try until rains stops.
DavidHowell3633
The car is in the garage under its own power. Hiking a leg and putting it in gear actually worked. Who would have thought? Crazy K. Thanks.
