SUPERDUTYD
Ihave a 92 Z4 with the bose radio. The problem is sometimes the system works fine (rarely). Sometimes it's real quiet, or only the front speakers work, or only one, or the speakers just make a fast thumping sound. I tried a different amp and radio with the same results. I want to keep the system stock but i need a radio. Anybody know what could be wrong. bad ground? any help or wiring diagrams would be very helpful. 92turboLE
someone correct me if i am wrong, but for the most part, if i recall correctly, the head unit is simply a control unit and the Amp itself should be in the trunk mounted to the back of the seat or something like that.... It sounds to me that it is a problem with the amp itself... There are a few things you can do... A) try and find the stock Bose Amp setup in a junkyard and try that out. or you would have to totally re-wire your entire audio system if you wanted to change to a new face unit. You said that when you tried a different deck, you got the same results, it definately sounds to me that your existing face unit is fine and your amp is fubared. Another possible option - now im not totally familiar with that system - but i know some of the other vehicles, including porsche and many others used the same or very similar type of setup, with the external amp, BUT several of them were just like normal amps with RCA imputs and high-level outputs. If this is the case, you can very easily switch form your stock malfunctioning amp to a high powered aftermarket 4channel amp. Of course you would have to wire your car for the larger power wires for the amp, but it might work. then for the most part your setup will look totally stock and sound 100% better. let me know what you find out. - Justin
SUPERDUTYD
i figured it was the amp so i bought a used one off of e-bay from a guy that said it was good. i tried that amp and it does the same thing. of course the new one could be bad too. so now i'm stuck. LukeZ34
It's all low level inputs plugged in via a harness to the amp.. It's the amp.. it's a common problem with any automotive Bose system.
92turboLE
in that case, with a little creativity and a soldering iron and some heat shrink tubing, one could make an aftermarket amp work just fine... - Justin

'With aftermarket speakers' I really wouldn't recommend running an aftermarket amp with those Bose speakers. Most of them are anywhere between 1 and 1.5 ohms. 92turboLE
although, for the most part, a decent amp will handle 1-1.5 ohms in stereo without a problem... its when you get to the bridged amps that have an issue. although i could see that causing future problems so you would want to change the speakes, although it isnt necissary as long as the amp will handle it. even the cheap sonys will do 1ohm stereo.... you get like a fosgate or something like that then it wont be a problem... you run into issues with K-Mart brand amps like Rampage and audiovox that will not hold a 1ohm load. - Justin
cutsup1996
heres what i know from professional stereo sellers and installers, i have asked the same question to more than one and get the same answer over again. bose products can only work, or work well with other bose products, never change speakers and keep a bose head unit or vice versa, bose is very specific and made differently than any other electronic brand out there, either swap it all out for aftermarket or change it all with brand new bose
