Dirty MAF causing Shifting issues?

Is this even possible...or am i just imagining things?

Basically...ever since spring, i've noticed a drop in fuel mileage in the Regal. Where I would normally average 28.5 - 30 MPG in daily driving, i've only been able to manage about 25 - 26. The only thing that I had changed was the tires....which really shouldn't make that much of a difference. The air filter was kinda dirty so I changed that as well...and still...no real difference. Fast forward to last night..i was bored so I grabbed a can of MAF cleaner a figure what the hell do I have to lose? So i went to town on that. After taking the car for a drive...it was like night and day! The thing seems so much more responsive then it ever did before. With the AC running, it always seemed to have a slight rough idle...now it's perfect.

The biggest thing I've noticed though...ever since I bought the car, there was always a slight flare when shifting from 3rd to 4th under light throttle, once everthing was warmed up. Now...that seems to have been all but eliminated. Is this even possible? Could it just that the engine is running a little healthier now? or is there some kind of link between the shifting and the MAF?

This is basically just for my own curiosity....but after driving the car now...i really regret not doing this at the beginning of spring

PS: This is on my 2000.....just FYI

good info,a lot of people do not realize how important maf readings are to the overall engine performance.

leave that to GM's code engineers for relying on it for almost everything....

Ha, ya neighbors 94 century with a 3300 ran like a dream in park. As soon as you put in in drive it would bog way down and wouldn't want to go over 10 mph... It threw a bad o2 sensor code. After a bit of searching online found out it was a MAF issue.. Replaced that and it ran like a dream.

How old is the O2 sensor? In my experience, they start going bad way before the check engine light comes on...Usually, the first thing I've noticed is a drop in fuel mileage. If it's got more than about 50,000 miles on it, might be time for a change..

I'm assuming that the O2 sensor is original to the car. The car has just over 140 000 km (about 87 000 miles) on it. I'll see what happens right now after cleaning the MAF....Just judging by the gauge...it appears to be getting better fuel mileage than before I cleaned it. If i don't notice a difference...then i'll look at changing the O2 sensor.
