Charging system problem Lumina Z34.

I got gas yesterday and on the way home the ''BATTERY'' light comes on the dash. No ''SES'' light. As I'm braking the tach and gauges wiggle. As it sits now I have the battery and everything out of the car and cleaned the area. I guess I gotta test the current battery? Any input?

Yup sounds like an alternator to me. What are you buying for alternators? Honestly, I'm done buying AC Delco alternators. In the last 2 years, I've had 3 fail on classics. Good thing they are easier to replace than yours.

My family has always had good luck with USA Industries alternators. When I worked at the auto parts store, very very rarely did we ever have one returned defective.

you like cheap or you like good?

i would grab a durkalast at vatozone, lifetime warranty!

I want a really good one. I can't put an alt on myself.....I'm more worried about how much it's gonna be to fix!

Make sure to get a lifetime warranty with whatever alternator you choose. That being said, i'll second the duralast lifetime warrantied alt. I've had one in my 1993 for a little over 8 years now. My '93 went through a lot of alts when my parents still owned it. Most of them didn't last more than a year at a time and a lot of them were new ac delcos.

God damn. My mother put AC Delco alts on the Z34, the first time it stalled before it left the shop, and they had to take it all apart again to put another one on. Now this!? FUCK ME, I can't catch a break and it be a battery. My 96' LQ1 Lumina has it's original alt! It also has a cooling duct like an air intake for it to keep it cool. The Z34 has disappointed me this year and after fixing it, I'm gonna re-instate the LS.....it's dying to be started.

Chad, I would purchase a Hitachi alternator from Canadian Tire or Partsource as they are lifetime warrantied.

Go get a quote and see what they want to swap the alt.

If its too much, I could swap the alt for you for cheaper (ideally at my place in Kitchener where all my tools are) on one of my rotations off. I work 4 days on , 4 days off.

Thanks Matt! So Hitachi has lifetime warranty? I did a little browsing, doesn't look like there is a higher amperage alternator for the LQ1. Matt, I'd love to smash some beers and do this alt with you, but it will quit running before I get to Kitchener hahaha. I shut the car off when it was acting glitchy. Unusual for this car, it's been so strong, and I was giving it lots of praise for running so well after sitting. :(

Yeah I'm 99% sure Hitachi is lifetime.

105 amp (stock) is lots, I ran a system on my AC Delco 105 amp alt in my old white Z for years without issue.

Well, thanks for all your help guys. Turns out I was right it was the battery! Lucked out and saved the alterator by shutting it down before any damage was done! OPTIMA time....I'm DONE WITH DELCO!
