im looking at putting a 3.4 dohc in my 1994 Gran Prix. what transmisions are used for a 5 speed with that motor? Does anyone know of anyone who has already done this? If so did they run into alot of problems?? Any help would be much appreciated....

Muncie/Getrag 284. It's a tad beefier than the 282, has a pull type clutch, and repairs/mods are insane costly as well as parts. It's not a common tranny, but you can find them.

I would personally suggest the 282 for obvious reasons.

If you go ahead with the 284 swap, just find a junked out 5-speed z-34 or just about any 3.4 with a 5 speed. Take everything from the trans to the shifter and all things in between. I would suggest the same for the 282.

VERY do-able, the DOHC/Getrag (282 or 284) will fit fine. you'll actually have more clearance with the 5-speed since they are smaller than the auto trannies are. at least my 282 was much smaller and a helluva lot lighter than my original 4T60. your BIG problem will be mounting the clutch pedal. i believe the dash changed in '94 and there was no provision for the clutch pedal mount. bummer but it can be done. i believe someone on this forum swapped a Getrag 284 5-speed into his later model ('94+....forgot which car he had :? ) hth somewhat anyway
