Q-Ball
Had an issue on Saturday. I went to start the car normally, and it didnt do anything. No click, no nothing. Power comes on fine. But it started after I tried it 4 or 5 times. Well, its now stuck at my parents place. I tried atleast 40x and nothing. Tried about 20 times today too and nothing. I smacked the selonoid on the starter a few good times too. I have my old starter I am going to try and put on. I have 3 month old tested battery I am going to put in as well. Actually, what I will do first is get my old starter tested. Than first try my new battery and if that doesnt work, I guess replace the starter. To be honest, I'm getting sick of it. I'm moving in 2 weeks too. I'm still on the hunt for an 08 Cadillac SRX. It's just got worse now as my back up car isnt working. First the regal knocks, and now this thing wont start. Any other idea's? Edited July 13, 2010 by Q-Ball
jtwmechanic
need to know for sure that you have a good hot bat and a good stong starter with solid connections before you go any further.
Q-Ball
need to know for sure that you have a good hot bat and a good stong starter with solid connections before you go any further. Ok, got a brand new battery (even got it tested) and a brand new rebuilt starter for a 3x00 (the newer smaller one) First I tried the battery, nothing. I than went to replace the starter and still nothing. I had a ground issue which I fixed last year. It was due to the aftermarkert Alarm, Remote Start, and keyless entry. The ground went to a plug above the front valve cover. I had a butt connector connecting it, I even removed it and twisted the wires together and still nothing. I checked to see if I have power goint to my Aux post, all my headlights still work so that checks out. The small wire from the starter goes to I believe my ignition switch. I hear everything prime, and I hear a faint click, BUT NOT from the starter selenoid. It's at my cruise control box. Eventually if you try to keep starting it, my alarm will chirp a few times for some reason too. I'm really guessing it has something to do with the aftermarket install. Only problem, this place I was recommended to go is not out of buisness! So much for lifetime warrenty. On the inside I have a toggle switch disconnected that aparently 2 wires get connected for the remote start. The shop left it disconnected because my starter was dying than. I really dont know what to do. Car gets tons of power, I hear the full pump priming, just wont turn over. Let say if the PCM failed, it would still try and turn over from the starter though right? Just not fire up?
Q-Ball
bump. i got a new starter and battery in and its still not working. I'm moved now, so its even further for me to get to my parents and work on it. Any idea's? If not I might just tow it to a shop. I dont know how to track down all this wiring with an aftermarket alarm. If that even is the case. Oh I checked the fuses too

jtwmechanic
i did not mean go buy new parts just verify that they were good strong ones. the small wire on the small post at the starter, does it go hot when the key is turned to crank it over? if no then check all fuses again, all good? go to the starter relay and fuse and make sure you are getting voltage through and verify that the relay is working. is your key chipped. if so the wires inside the column could have broke that carry the signal to the vats. they attach to either side of the ign. switch. I had another battery and I can always take back the starter. But thanks for your reply! First, your saying the actual small wire from the starter gets hot as in temperature? I just moved and I am still unpacking, but I'll dig out my multi meter and also see if voltage is passing through the relay and fuse. And no, my car keys are not chipped. Thanks! Crazy K
bad igntion switch. bad Neutral safety switch (have you tried starting in neutral? damaged starter wire (thick yellow) see if it is cut and re-routed at the base of the column. blown fuseable link. c100 connector wire corroded. I have started my car by jumping the starter in the past when something broke. everyone of the above has happened to something I've owned or worked on. White93z34
you say you have a aftermarket alarm? are you SURE it is good yet? most alarm installs take the yellow wire off the ignition switch and take one end into the alarm box and the other out of it for starter disable maybe try connecting that back to how it was stock and see if that gets you anywhere? Ya, I did try starting in neutral and nothing. I'll check the starter wire. I checked the fuses, but I'll check again. And where is the C100 connector located? voltage not temperature!!!!!!!!!!!!! Alright thanks you say you have a aftermarket alarm? are you SURE it is good yet? most alarm installs take the yellow wire off the ignition switch and take one end into the alarm box and the other out of it for starter disable maybe try connecting that back to how it was stock and see if that gets you anywhere? There is so much wiring I dont know where to start. I had a wire spliced from above my valve cover and it melted to my exhaust manifold and caused the car not to start. But i fixed it and it worked fine for about a year. Does anyone have wiring a diagram to connect an aftermarket alarm? I'd need it for keyless, alarm, and remote start. I actually removed my old reciever for my original keyless entry when I got this system installed ~4 years ago. I think I'll try and bring my car home and work on it and snap some pics. jtwmechanic
use your multi-meter to test voltage at the small wire on the small post on the starter when the key is turned to crank position. and follow it back to the ign switch through the relay and the fuse box to the fire wall connector to the interior fuse box to the switch or start at the switch and move toward the starter. i am not the best at explaining how to trouble shoot electrical but if i was there your shit would already be fixed days ago. each man has his own methods to the madness. BS009
I feel good to see this thread pop up. This has been plaguing my car too for the past year and a half so I'm quite anxious to see what your problem turns out to be. I'm sure though that in my case It's either a bad connection or a faulty ignition switch. It does it at the most random occassions too. What I ended up doing temporarily is attaching another wire to the starter solenoid and giving it 12v through a relay with a switch in the car and it works every time. Ok, but where do I put the other lead besides on the small wire post? I feel good to see this thread pop up. Any pics or a drawing? If I could somehow "jump" my starter to get it back to my house it would be much easier for me. And do you have an aftermarket alarm installed as well? jtwmechanic
its just like using a test light, one lead(red) is for the wire or ciruit being tested and the other lead(black) is a good ground source. you should Google "how to use a multi-meter" and take a crash course in circuit testing and how to locate shorts before you go to work on your car again.
