bronze93
Is there and easy way to replace this? AllDataDiy is saying I have to remove the cam carrier in order to do this. Suggestions, Tips, Tricks Thanks
slick
Rock the engine forward?
spiderw31
I suppose you could remove the dogbone and loosen motor mounts to allow the engine to be rotated all the way forward. That might give you enough room to get back there, but the nut closest to the alternator will still likely give you trouble. I don't know if you'd be able to slide the manifold all the way off with the alternator still in place. Ha! slick beat me to it
Galaxie500XL
I'm pretty sure on the LQ1, that attempting this would destroy the engine mounts, they are different than ones used on other engines.
White93z34
it is a steel gasket and should never blow out... are you sure it is that leaking and not the manifold to downpipe donut gasket?
bronze93
Replaced the donut last night.
spiderw31
I'm pretty sure on the LQ1, that attempting this would destroy the engine mounts, they are different than ones used on other engines. Hence why I mentioned to loosen the other mounts

bronze93
Alright, I've been working on the getting the exhaust manifold and it is actually easier to rock the engine back as if you were doing the 45 min. alternator change. The last thing I took off was the heat shield for the exhaust manifold 6 nuts. I was expecting to find 8 more nuts holding the manifold to the engine but only found 2 were the shield wasn't. Is this right or did the PO not put all the nuts back on? Also the manifold is a light orange rust not the dark brown like the crossover or the front manifold. Is this normal, caused by the fact that the exhaust gasket is possibly bad, or the fact of possibly missing nuts?
spiderw31
I don't remember for sure since it was a while ago that I pulled the manifolds off of my '92, but I want to say that what you describe for the nuts sounds right. Don't remember a difference in color on mine, but considering the firewall side of the engine is likely to be hotter than the radiator side, I'd expect at least some difference in color. bronze93
So should I replace the gasket or just put nuts on and then the heat shield and more nuts?
spiderw31
If you've gotten this far, I'd just finish pulling it (assuming only minimal work left) and replace the gaskets. They look to me like they are supposed to crush a little when the manifold bolts down, so I'd say to expect a bit of a leak if you just put the nuts back on. Not to mention I'd hate to get that far into the job, and know that I just didn't bother to finish it regardless! What ever way you go though, I think you should just stick to one nut per stud. I'm reasonably certain that's how mine was assembled, and I've got no leaks at all on reassembly.
bronze93
Okay, I got the old gasket off and it looks like it was leaking at the first exhaust port. Here is the gasket I pulled off : Old: Old: In the second picture of each set I leaned the gasket against a socket. The two gaskets definately look defferent. The old one is one complete gasket and is thicker. Will this make a difference? Thanks
spiderw31
I agree, it does look as though the old gasket was leaking, almost looks like on both 1 and 5 too! Those new gaskets are exactly like the ones I installed on mine, and they work great with no leaks. edit: I see in your sig that your ride is one of a kind according to compnine... mine is too
bronze93
Yeah, I was suprised to see that about the compnine info. I really can't wait to get the car on the road. Unfortunately, I'm laid up for a couple of days and don't know when I can get back under the car.
