Galaxie500XL Posted June 14, 2010 Report Posted June 14, 2010 Now that I've sold my '94 LeBaron, I have the cash to do a rebuild of the transmission in my '95 LQ1 Cutlass convertible. The transmission shop here is very reputable, but I want to make sure if there's differences in the transmission used in the 3.4 versus the 3.1, that they build it for the 3.4. Is the converter stall speed different in the transmissions installed with the 3.4, and are there any suggestions I should make to the rebuilder as to what I'd like done to the transmission? Thanks; Daniel in Knoxville Quote
RobertISaar Posted June 14, 2010 Report Posted June 14, 2010 yes, difference in the torque convertor, as well as the FDR. those may be the only differences between a 95 3100 and 3.4 4T60E... have the accumulators shimmed. Quote
Galaxie500XL Posted June 17, 2010 Author Report Posted June 17, 2010 Does anyone know the specifics on the torque converter difference for the LQ1? Quote
RobertISaar Posted June 18, 2010 Report Posted June 18, 2010 interestingly, the 3100 TC is rated for a ~30RPM higher stall speed... Quote
Galaxie500XL Posted June 18, 2010 Author Report Posted June 18, 2010 Interesting..you'd think the LQ1 would have a higher stall converter, since the bulk of the power is rather high up the RPM band... Do you know the stall speeds, and is there really an advantage between the 3.1, and LQ1 converters, since there's only a 30 RPM difference? Quote
Crazy K Posted June 18, 2010 Report Posted June 18, 2010 One set of the 1-2 or 2-3 accumulator springs are oriented differently, I think there is a difference in the valvebody to accomplish that.... Quote

Galaxie500XL Posted March 2, 2011 Author Report Posted March 2, 2011 After nearly 2 years of having this car, I FINALLY have the money, and the time to take it to get the transmission rebuilt. Based on your answer from June of last year, should I insist the 2060 stall speed converter be installed? ('95 LQ1) The reason I ask, is I'd almost bet they'll put the standard torque converter in, unless I ask. Are there any advantages/disadvantages in one over the other? I'm kind of thinking a 35 RPM difference in stall speeds is probably undetectable, but I'm assuming GM did it for a reason. Thoughts? Quote
RobertISaar Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 i HIGHLY doubt you would ever feel the difference. the PCM won't care either. Quote
Galaxie500XL Posted March 2, 2011 Author Report Posted March 2, 2011 Pretty much what I was thinking. I want the job done right, but there's no point in insisting on something that really doesn't matter. Thanks! Quote
Crazy K Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 silly question... does the trans actually need rebuilding????? Quote
Galaxie500XL Posted March 2, 2011 Author Report Posted March 2, 2011 (edited) Not a silly question at all... I had questions about the transmission when I bought the car. Took it to a transmission shop, their recommendation was not to buy the car. I did anyway, having need of a convertible that held 5 full-sized people (I have 3 kids), to replace the LeBaron convertible I had been driving. The LQ1 was a bonus, I had always wanted one (Z-34), but never found one in reasonable mechanical shape. By the time I went completely through the car, and found several issues, the car lot sold it to me for half their original asking price ($2600). I've put 25,000 miles on the car, taking care of the trans, just to keep it together until I could rebuild it. I even added the factory transmission cooler to try to keep trans temps down. Anyhow, the rundown: 208,000 miles on the clock, some slip in 1st, and the TCC quits locking up after trans fluid temps reach 180 degrees, which then disables overdrive. Transmission fluid was dark and slightly burnt when I bought the car. Fluid and filter change was the first thing I did, after replacing the dead modulator, which was sucking trans fluid. Additionally, on takeoff, the torque converter sounds like a coffee can full of rocks. I've babied it for the last year and a half, while I sorted out all the mechanical issues the car had when I bought it. I'm down now to just the transmission on my "to do list". DavidHowell3633 Posted March 8, 2011 Report Posted March 8, 2011 Hey neighbor. When you say yours is slipping in 1st, I would like to compare notes. Mine has started to shudder if I get on it while in 1st. Is yours slipping- revving with slow forward movement or shuddering? I just changed fluid/filter. Don't mean to hijack. Just want to be sure what you mean.. Quote
Galaxie500XL Posted March 8, 2011 Author Report Posted March 8, 2011 Not a problem. I don't have a shudder, but I do seem to have a good bit of slip. Once I shift into 2nd, things get pretty normal. It's severe enough that it's rarely possible to get so much as a chirp out of the front tires, even when pushing it pretty hard. Quote
DavidHowell3633 Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 I hate to admit it. But, I was low on fluid.... After 203K I was expecting the worst. Good luck with yours. Quote
