So my car has never been clay barred, my my knowledge, and definitely not in the 4 years I've had it. I'm wondering if I can clay bar the car if I already have some wax on it. Or should I wash with dish soap to strip the wax before I claybar? Thanks in advance.

Wouldn't hurt to strip the wax beforehand. Then claybar, then wash again (not with detergent). Then go to town with a wax job.

Depending on how long ago/what wax you used, yeah a dish soap wash beforehand couldn't hurt. Carnauba waxes usually only last 6-8 months, so if you haven't waxed the car in that time period than most, or all, of the wax should be gone. But if you used a synthetic paint sealant, it lasts longer than carnauba.

Claybar can also take the wax off as well. But I don't think it's as consistent as a good ol' dish soap wash.

I've got your run off the mill Turtle Wax on the car right now, probably 2 months old. Water still beads, so I'll just strip the wax and go from there. Thanks guys.

Is there a purpose for keeping a layer of wax on your car that I don't know about?
