jtwmechanic
just for anyone interested. basically just a long block swap from 95 3100 to a 06 lnj 3400. swap consist of swapping front cover, balancer, oilpan, modified a/c bracket(just a little grinding), ect... you know the drill. only exception is the manditory use of an external crank trigger because of crankshaft machining differences. i got mine from British Car Conversions who happen to be right next door to Milzy Motorsports. BCC makes one hell of a nice product, fit perfectly. i also used the uim and lim with fel-pro steel gaskets for a 2000 3400. next will be update to obd II. Crazy K
honest question: On the quad 4 there was a change in crank notches around 89-90, which some people remedied by welding in the incorrect notch and cutting a new one when they needed to use a wrong cranked engine with their current chip... This did require oil pan removal. But could the same be done to the 3x00 engine? OR.... alternatively, one person had a reman Q4 installed and the motor ran wrong somehow. the issue was diagnosed as the timing being wrong, and a easy remedy was to burn a chip with the timing altered to the alternate pattern than was int he vehicle. can the timing be altered in the OBD 2 PCM and therefore not require the external crank trigger ring? jtwmechanic
well with the lnj the section of the crank that is machined for timing is actually a larger diameter than the other 3x00 engines so the sensor bottoms out on the crank. i guess that could be fixed by shimming it but the maching on the crank is totally different than the 3x00 engines. i don't beleive altering it is an option.with the pcm fix, the way i understand it the lnj pcm is preprogrammed with the crank timing and only uses the sensor for monoriting changes. i really couldn't tell you if an older obd II pcm can be changed to read the info the same way. my knowledge on the 3500, 3900 and the equinox lnj 3400 is limited as far as the pcm managment. i beleive the crank trigger i used and any alike is the easiest and most dependable way to get around the problem. i am still running obd I on the 95 so i don't think i could burn a chip and for what it is worth the external ring gives you the ability to retard 20* or advance 10* not that i will need to do that but on some race applications you would want to take advantage of that adjustment. 1QUICKHATCH
I am using the TCE crank trigger on my 3500 in my alero. I have mine set 2* advanced untill I tune it! The 3500 crank trigger ring has a lot more teeth and they are stagerd in rows. The 3400 and older ecms can't be converted to read it or at least not easily if its possible! So how dose it work and why did you decide to use the 3400 and not the 3500?
jtwmechanic
well i swap motors and do conversions like auto into standard and alot of s-10 stuff and always buying roll-overs and such, so i guess it was convienant because i already had it. if i had a 3500 or even better a 3900 i would have done that swap instead. i can say that this lnj motor is very smooth and definately has more power than the ragged out 3100 that was in it. 1QUICKHATCH
I like to do swaps too! just have trouble finding the time! I take it that you are running on the stock ECM? I am sure it works better than my 3400 lumina dose on the stock '92 ECM, works good but is begging for a tune! did you do any thing else to it or is it dropped in with stock exhaust...? jtwmechanic
so far it is all stock ecm and all. unlike my other cutty with L67, just waiting on my wiring harness. it has a tuned pcm, 3.4 pulley, headers w/3" DP, and soon a north star TB. i really want to put a turbo similar to kuntzie on the lnj and headers, but will wait until i do the obd II swap on it. where are you located? if your like me you are the only W-body freak in area. 1QUICKHATCH
I am in Ontario about 20mins from kuntzie! I am probably the only one for about 20mins! I have a set of headers waiting to be welded up for mine but I want to see what it runs now before I do anything to it! do you have any pics of yours? jtwmechanic
i am going to be posting pics soon of both as soon as they are complete. both of them are heading to my buddies bodyshop for fresh paint, i am lucky to have two completely rust free cars and few golfball size dents. i have been to canada before several times. once up through alaska and down through the thousand islands and across niagra, the other was fishing at stergen falls and nippissin lake, not sure on the spelling. man i miss those canadian walley and pike what a fight.
