has anyone here built their own engine harness?

just curious since the L67 swap is becoming so popular is there a way we can all pull our knowledge together and help each other build our own and save some dough? remember it's w-body's against the rest of the world mua ha ha ha!!!!!!!!!

It would probably be even more costly if we were to build a harness on our own. Not only do you got to pay labor, but the connectors would be next to impossible to buy new and even just the wire alone would cost a pretty penny. I thought this thread was going to be about wire tucks/wire reroutes as I was about to say I did modify a 79 Trans Am harness of my friend's in order to clean up the engine bay, but that was maybe 10-15 wires so that doesn't really count .

building it from scratch would cost more than PAINLESS would charge...

take a look at the connector prices from eficonnection.com... and they're usually cheaper than anyone else.

i have went through the entire engine harness in the MC and i'll just state that it would be much easier and cheaper to find a harness that's in decent conditon and use it. maybe clean it up a bit and run new loom/tape.

oh, and good luck finding new C100 or other proprietary connectors.

Having studied the schematics for the '99 Lumina 3800 harness to figure out how to make it mesh with OBD I, I have to say I think you would be absolutely insane to attempt it.

having changed a few vehicles from OBD1.5 to OBD1, it's not necessarily tough, just a massive headache from staring at and looking up shit for a while.

but there are two major things that tell me this is a fool's quest:

cost of getting new connectors and a couple hundred feet of wiring(estimate, probably high as well) is horrid.

time to measure/cut/crimp/solder/heatshrink/wrap/loom it all correctly is also insane.

Why use new connectors? Most GM connectors can be found on a variety of vehicles. Building a harness is not hard if you have wiring diagrams. But it is labor intensive and tedious. How much is your time worth to you?

why use old connectors(that are potentially worn out) on a new harness? and no, not hard, just long boring work.

well now i didn't really mean from scratch. i meant reworking the harness that best meets the needs. i am still going to pay someone else to build my cutty harness this time, but i will diffinately take on the task next trip which will be update from obd I to obd II in my other cutty for the 3400 swap. painless won't build anything but a stand alone harness which means it only runs the engine no guages,a/c or anything accessory related with it. all the other harnesss builders are the same way seems like and they wanted around $500.00. if you want a stock appearence and all your shit to work then its either do it yourself or pay Brian Teel of motorswap who is the best as far as i know (google it i did for hours) no one else will touch this stuff. and of course wiring as said before is boring tedious tiring relentless and will make your eyes melt right out of their sockets and mostly time consuming.

That is why everyone uses the MC 3800 harness for Gen I L67 swaps. And I believe Teal just re-pins the MC harness and sets up whatever car it is intended for with OBD II if not so equipped (I think this is what he does, too lazy to check). Anyhow, if I remember correctly his price is pretty damn fair considering you don't have to deal with all the diagrams/headaches involved.

your right about his pricing and he is a pro at this. i wouldn't let just anyone do my wiring. if you don't pin it right or you over load a circut you will have bad problems later. many diy wiring has burnt to the ground weeks after project completion. his track record is 100%. i talked to and read through many threads all over the net and everyone agrees he is the man for wiring. i truly love my cutty especially with the L67 in it and i want it 110% right

i don't get why everyone is so afraid of doing the very slight mods necessary to the 98-99 1.5 3800 engine harness...

~200 or more for that? fuck, i should get into this, that's easy money for the time and work.

so you feel totally comfortable taking my harness 96 cutty, the 99 monte 3800 harness, and making it run my L67 with all my guages, a/c ect.... simply plug it in and start the car and go. if you do then i would rather have someone from w-body do it than anyone else. i also need a obd I to obd II swap harness for my 95 cutty 3400 swap. would you be interested in either? and how much? his harnesses look and fit and run everything like factory! no intermediate codes either.

you know what, i'll make a goddamn spreadsheet for the C100 and if you want, you can do it yourself and save some time and money.

you're gonna love this... everything on the C100 matches perfectly with a few exceptions that just need to be cut on the engine side... A1, B1, C2, J1... and you need to cut B2 and ground it somewhere... that's it. anyone that PAYS for that, i pity.

now i'm looking at the actual engine part of it...

in return Robert if there is anything you need or if i can help you out in the future just say the word. there are few poeple left these days that are willing to help each other out.

Haha I know what you mean Robert, this stuff is pretty damn simple. It is one of those things though that people just don't want to do/do not have the time or patience and therefor you can charge whatever the hell you want in order to provide a relatively easy service.

according to a FAQ on mymonte about swapping a L67 into a 96MC using a 98-99 Z34 harness, you actually don't even have to play with anything on the engine side either... i'd have thought the boost bypass valve would need to be messed with, but i guess not.

"Low boost- make sure the boost bypass valve (cylinder on the front of the supercharger) has the wiring going to its solenoid hooked up correctly (or that the vac port is blocked off to get rid of the solenoid completely). You have to run a wire to the pcm and such- and it is possible to screw it up. If you're down around 2-4 psi on a stock pulley- either you have a massive vacuum leak, or this is the problem."

http://mymonte.com/discussion/topic/23142-l67-swap-walkthrough/

BTW, i referenced all of the wiring suggestions in that thread to the FSMs for a 96 cutty 3100 and a 99 MC 3800 and it matches perfectly.

I can do OBD1.5 to OBD2 harness's whenever. And after I do indeed do the L67 swap in Andrei's car, doing a L67 swap harness I could do for around $250 or less and thats with me supplying the harness.

Wiring doesnt scare me.. I get my jollies off to playing with wiring!

jtwmechanic... In regards to the post you made in Andrei's thread.

I can OBD2 swap your 95 CS for $150 parts and labor. Ya just gotta send me some cash so I can get the parts and then drive up and I can install it, pay the rest, and by that evening, you'll be driving back home

when can you start on the harness for the L67 i already have a 99 3800 mc harness, boost bypass valve connector all the way to the pins, evap vacum side connector to the pins, and have already modded the plugins to fit my sensors and the fans i use. i can ship them to you. do you need to know the service # of my pcm for the pinouts.

I can start on it anytime really, but Andrei's care is priority over everything. I intend to do everything in my power to get his harness tomorrow or friday, depending on weather although im not scared of a bit of rain (Venom and I actually pulled a 3400 out in quite a bit or rain.lol) I just do it in a downpour (damn Ohio storms, they come hard and leave you wet haha)

Knowing the service number of the PCM will help, but more importantly I need to know the year/make/model.

here it is:

car-96 olds cutlass supreme 2dr (the build date is 08/95 but the title says 96)

harness-99 monte carlo 3800

pcm-service number says it from a 97 L67 grand prix,

i am going to use this pcm until i can afford a tuned one

I can get the harness done, and get the PCM powered up and running off a temporary dummy DLC so I can communicate and I can tune it and make some changes for ya, but the cost will be $100 since I will have to buyy the credits to license it with my HP Tuners setup.

I can get another PCM (I think 98-up has some other changes) for $35 at the yard if you want a different year.

And if you supply everything, I can do the harness for $100 plus return shipping on everything.
