jtwmechanic
anyone here know if the bolt holes that were casted into the 96 block and heads are still casted and tapped in the late model block and heads?
Night Fury
You mean 3.5?
RobertISaar
You mean 3.5? i'll have to agree here... i'm fairly certain that 05 was the last year for the 3400... and yes, they are VERY similar in that you should be able to hook up everything the was is was on the 96 3100... assuming it's not a VVT 3500 anyway, but i think those were only 04-05... BXX
VVT 3500 (LZE) was 06-up Non-VVT 3500 (LX9) was 04-
WhatTheFehl
I don't mean to derail this thread but I'm curious... I'm assuming that to put a 3500 into my car I would need to OBD2 swap it... but what else is involved? What are the power gains? Aftermarket? If doing this is easier than putting an L67 in... I may consider it in the future...

RobertISaar
140hp vs 210hp /hijack 160HP noob!! and yeah, it's almost a drop-in motor(non-VVT)... and the adjustable crank trigger will allow you to retard some of the excessive spark that the 3100 tune would have that the 3500 doesn't need... that covers spark. VE is a bit different though... but with the right combo of injectors and fuel pressure, you could probably get some decent results. without swapping or tuning... though honesly, i recommend it. tornado_735
160HP noob!! but you told me the 3500 was 210hp. Or was it the 3900?
WhatTheFehl
The 3100 is 160 HP
WhatTheFehl
Do you think a 3500 would be a good engine to turbocharge?
RobertISaar
The 3100 is 160 HP WIN Do you think a 3500 would be a good engine to turbocharge? FUCK YES! you know how well those heads flow? but you told me the 3500 was 210hp. Or was it the 3900? correct. the 3900 is 240/
jtwmechanic
definately a 3400, it originally came out of an equinox and according to my resources was still in them through 09. i would like to put it into another cutty i have which is actually a 95 and i want and need to do a obd II conversion on it anyway. BXX
LX9 is around 196 to 201hp. the LZ4/LZE is 211hp in 06 and went to 224hp in 2007 with a few power variences here and there.

RobertISaar
i'll rephrase... the last LA1 was ~2005 the equinox uses a LNJ, still a 3400, but not quite the same.
jtwmechanic
The 3.4 L LNJ is a 204-cubic-inch (3,350 cc) modified version of the normal 3400 engine. It includes a modified intake manifold, oil pan, engine cover, and fuel system as well as electronic throttle control. It is built in China and imported to Canada for use in the Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent. The LNJ makes 185 hp (138 kW) and 210 lb-ft. sorry for the confusion. RobertISaar
the electronic throttle is going to be something you'll have to workaround... the oil pan is likely different and it might be returnless fuel injection, all of which would likely be issues. Jonpro03
You need to modify the trans/engine mount because the holes are off by just a little bit.
jtwmechanic
i plan on long blocking the engine and use lim and uim off of 2000 LA1 and all the rest of the brackets and tranny from the 95 cutty, with update to OBD II. i would just use a LA1 engine but i don't have one of those. looks to me like i will need to change the timing cover and balancer.
