GnatGoSplat
I have a Walbro fuel pump that didn't come with that foam sleeve. I could buy one for around $10, but all it does is reduce noise and vibration. Has anyone omitted the sleeve? If so, did you find it noisy enough that if you had to do it again, you would get the sleeve? I will also be omitting the pulsator, FWIW. RobertISaar
sleeve? that? it almost looks like a prefilter.
GnatGoSplat
Nah, they look like this on the pump: I think the AC Delco and many aftermarket installation kits come with them, and the original pump has it too. It's for reducing noise and vibration (like the pulsator), but I don't know if it only makes a little difference or a lot. I can't imagine it making a lot of difference seeing as it's just foam, but I've been wrong before.
RobertISaar
i see... the little bag looking thing IS the prefilter, but not the poart you're missing... i really don't see that being very effective at all actually... might take away some pump whine, but i don't see it doing more than that. GnatGoSplat
Yeah, I'm strongly leaning towards not worrying about it. I guess if it's noisy... well, that's what the volume knob on the radio is for!
Dark Ride
Yeah, I'm strongly leaning towards not worrying about it. I guess if it's noisy... well, that's what the volume knob on the radio is for! I really can't see it making much difference either, I didn't put one on my Wal-bro, but I haven't actually ran it yet. Did you figure something out on your fuel level sending unit?
GnatGoSplat
Yeah, actually I bought a new one from Rockauto, but after I saw how it was put together, I got an idea on how to fix my old one with a simple spring. The moving part on mine had wiper tabs that broke off, and I saw the Rockauto one had a coil spring between the moving and fixed parts, so I put a spring in mine similar to the Rockauto one, and voila! It works. So now I think I might just return the one from Rockauto since it does seem quite a bit cheaper in overall quality.
jtwmechanic
just a simple noise/vibration damper, your choice with or without really doesn,t matter much. although if the pump is out and the sleeve is there then its always best to reassemble as factory. digitaloutsider
I wouldn't worry about it, personally.
Crazy K
I'm pondering a second use: COOLING. that thing soaks fuel in it and could help keep the pump cooler. I would reuse the old one it it has not stretched out.
GnatGoSplat
I couldn't use the original one from the TGP pump as it had deteriorated into a tar-like substance. However, I've changed fuel pumps in every W-body I own, so I took Ken's advice and reused an old one off a pump I pulled years ago (I save weak/intermittent ones, they make good all-purpose fluid extraction pumps). I've reassembled the TGP and after 5+ years, it's alive! Getting everything back together took about an hour, but that sure felt like the longest hour of my life. Felt like 6 hours. I'll be sore tomorrow from all that wriggling in and out from under the car. If I never do another W-body fuel pump, it'll be too soon.
