3800 starters

Since most of the talk around here is from you goofy 60* guys  I haven't really been able to for sure find out about the starter swap for a 3800. I assume a 60* starter won't work, so I need a newer 90* starter, maybe from a '00+? car-part.com has a ton of used ones around, I just don't know what to get it from or what year the 3800's switched starters. My aunt's '97 olds 88 SII still has the big-ass starter just like mine, so I know at least some of them used it well into the late 90's.

Would there be any issue using a SII starter on a SI? I know they changed some things on the blocks but the starter mounting, knowing GM, should HOPEFULLY be the same. I'd like to yank that big ol' sucker outta there soon and get something a little nicer sounding.

I thought they were the same?

compare on 04 impala with a 3400 to one with a 3800 to see if the part number is the same...

done. They appear different, but i think they can be swapped...

x2. All 60V6 and 3800 starters I've seen can be swapped. For reasons I've never understood, the part numbers of GM v6 starters are never the same from engine to engine and even from year to year they get a different partnumber when there appears to be no change in them whatsoever. I've never had an issue though. Both LQ1's at my house I stuck on a random newer 3800 starter just fine when the original bit the dust.

Looking at part stores, they show that later LQ1's and the S2 L67's have the strongest rated gear reduction starters(1.7kw). The non-supercharged 3800 series II and 3100's of the same era have the same rated starter(.3kw less than the LQ1/L67 starter).

That would explain why the supercharged cars were coming up with a different starter...

Well I'm pretty sure I don't need the high power one just for my car. Thanks for confirming that the 60* and 90* starters interchange though guys, that makes the search much easier.
