Larger Oil Filters

Anyone have any idea what other oil filters would fit my 3800?

These seem to cover a VERY broad range of cars (see below). I'd just like one that's a tad bit longer, and I'm sure there must be *something* out there that's compatible.

Any ideas?

AMERICAN MOTORS(1980 - 1984)

ASUNA1993BUICK(1975 - 2009)

CADILLAC(1981 - 1998)

CHEVROLET(1976 - 2010)

DAEWOO(1999 - 2002)

GMC(1978 - 2010)

ISUZU(1989 - 2003)

JEEP(1980 - 1986)

OLDSMOBILE(1975 - 2004)

PASSPORT(1988 - 1991)

PONTIAC(1976 - 2009)

SAAB(1994 - 1997)

SATURN(2005 - 2006)

SUZUKI(2004 - 2008)

Why do you need a larger oil filter??

Some of the most reliable and longest lasting engines (for example Nissan VQ) use a filter smaller than a small coffee cup.

most 3800 people seem to just run the pf52 style filter, however some brands make their pf52 equivalent a touch longer then the gm one hindering its use.

Thank you. That's what I was looking for. I have plenty of clearance behind my standard filter to fit a longer one.

Because it certainly can't hurt to have a larger filter. If anything, I'll get better flow as the filter gets more clogged.

To top it all off, the PF52 filter on rockauto is actually 8 cents cheaper than the PF47 filter. Not that it makes any difference, but you get the idea; its the same price, it has a larger filtration capacity, has potentially better flow with higher mileage, so why not use one?

Anyone have any idea what cars came with the PF52 filter so I can find the brand I want on rockauto?

Mid 90's 4.3's should call for PF52's, use something like a 1996 Blazer/Jimmy in your search. The PF52 is a bit of a tight fit on the limited space behind the L27, but they will work .I usually throw PF47's on the one I maintain or sometimes I use the motorcraft PF52 equivalent on there since it's a tad shorter(equivalent by size/thread, there is probably no cross-reference from AC Delco to motorcraft).

Thanks for the info. I had actually ordered 4 of the Wix models off of Rockauto as part of a larger order, so I should be good to go now.

actually, my dad's 5.7 yukon and tahoe used the PF52 as well... '96 and '99.

and WIX is a good choice... that's what the old PF52s were. before they went with the champion labs e-core abortion.

I haven't seen E-Core ACDelco's lately. Did they revert back to the original design?

you HAVEN'T seen them? that's all i can get around here...

Here's why I went with Wix:

I've made my oil filter buying decisions based on that. I pick up a Purolator PureOne where available, but the only decent opiton on rockauto is Wix, so I just go with that.

Around here, I'm seeing more e-cores lately, so I'm pretty sure they're still making them. I buy mine at walmart the majority of the time and they sell them out very frequently. Sometimes they restock w/ metal core, sometimes w/ e-core.

I just bought 2 Delco filters 3 weeks ago from Walmart. Both E-core..

And another thing, the oil filters we use at Firestone are the same composition (plastic inner retainer cage) and there have been ZERO reported failures. Im sure a person would report their engine blew up and Firestone was the last to change the oil.

Also, ALL cartridge type filters use a plastic retainer cage, including from the factory.

So one guy with a hi-po engine with a high flow oil pump running 20-50 oil had a failure. Im sure the bearings just scattered first and then entered the oil filter and destrooyed the plastic core cage.

this is hilarious to me. I was thinking I should start a thread like this one last week when I went to the dealership and bought a case of the PF52's. I got a great deal on them: $5.15/ea. then dumped the oil and popped the first one out of the case...."WHAT!!!!???? haha. these are going back in the morning."

the guy at the counter talked me into keeping the case. I went and found a case of WIX filters fo $5 a piece. then went back and returned the AC delco ones the next day.

the hassles I had to go through just to get a high quality oil filter. not going to put up with having an entire case of cheap ass crap when I can have the good stuff for cheaper though. anyway, thank you ac delco for trying to ruin my day.

  • 2 weeks later...

I went to Wal-Mart to get oil change stuff today, and got to thinking about this thread. I decided to get a larger oil filter, the one called for by the 94+ LQ1.
