Quick question about this starter...

...does anyone know what kind of starter is used on this TGP? It sounds so much better than how my car starts, IMO. If possible, I'd like to have my gp start up the same way and sound like the newer cars.

sounds like the late 60V6 starter... like 02(?)+ 3400. they're smaller than the ones we got from the factory, but apparently are stronger.

tgp owners have been putting those starters on their cars for years. they stopped making the big old clunkers in the early 90's.

you should be able to find one for cheap in any junkyard, fwd v6 cars from 94+

just say 96 or 97 GP or any w with 3100

FTR that is Shaun's (digitaloutsider) TGP, so it might be a good idea to ask him.

Anyway... that starter sounds exactly like the one on the '04 Cavi my uncle has... did the Ecotec get the same starter too?

That sounds like a gear reduction starter. I did the 3400 swap into my 3.4 LQ1 and starts much better now. The starter spins the engine up faster and seems to draw less current. There's 2 pics in my garage if you want to see the size difference. Do you have the 3.4 or the 3.1?

I have the 3.1. That would be great to own a starter that draws less current and spin up the engine faster. If you could post me the picture, that would be great. Thanks.

The pictures are in my wbody site garage not my actual garage. Just click on: '91 pontiac grand prix - in my post and you can see the mod pictures.

My starter has started acting up. Did these gear reduction starters vary in size by year, engine, and car, or are they all the same size?

I'd like to get the smallest and lightest starter possible. Would these be the same?

1999 Buick Century 24k miles

2005 Chevrolet Impala 56k miles

Parts catalog lists the ACDelco #336-1921 (PMGR) as OE replacement for the Century, but as an alternate for the Impala. OE for Impala is #323-1626 (PG260D) with the former as the alternate. It makes me wonder if some of these are a little different.

I assume I can reuse the original bolts from the big starter?

The starter from a 3400 will bolt up to a 3.4 LQ1. You need to keep the bolts for the 3400 starter the 3.4 ends up being a little short on one bolt. I don't think the year makes any difference.

  • 3 weeks later...

I finally got around to installing the "new" starter onto the 2.8L in my 89 Cutlass. I got the smallest 1.1Kw starter (336-1931) from an 05 Impala 3400. There is one that's slightly larger, 1.4Kw (336-1921). I did NOT need new bolts, the bolts from the old 2.8L starter were exactly the right size. I had to lose the brace that goes from AC compressor to starter because the solenoid on the new starter is in the way.

With careful measuring of the starter, I determined that you should NOT reuse the shim from the original starter. The starter gear shaft of the new starter is slightly lower than the old starter so that its location is very close to where the old starter + shim had it. The new starter's gear shaft will be closer to the original position by not reusing the shim.

New starter weighs 6.55 lbs.

Old starter weighs 13.50 lbs.

The new one is less than half the weight! Pretty cool that it does the exact same thing equally well with half the bulk. It definitely has a different sound.

will fit all 60*v6 engines also including the lnj 3400, 3500, 3800, 3900 series I and II and as previously stated the new ones are smaller and lighter and have more ass. more than likely if it has a 60*v6 bell housing pattern and the same # teeth on flywheel it will interchange as long as it is fwd.
