2006 Grand Prix doesn't like to shift out of park

Last December my mother bought a used '06 Grand Prix supercharged with 48,000 miles. It doesn't like to shift out of park, especially on inclines, and especially if you don't use the parking brake. I suppose that would be a worn parking pawl? My main question is whether this is going to necessitate a rebuild or some other major trans work... if the parking pawl gets worse how much would it cost to fix?

This issue is called torque lock. Any automatic transmission is going to act the same way of you don't use the parking brake on an incline.

You have to REALLY yank the shifter out of park UNLESS the car is on flat ground AND the parking brake is on. The 4T60E's in my '96 Cutlass Ciera and my sister's '96 Grand Prix can take a bit of force to get into gear if parked on a slight incline without the parking brake, but this seems worse by a factor of between 5 and 10.

Definitely shouldn't happen, probably an issue with the parking pawl unless you have a hard time fully engauging other gears as well then it could be the shifter cable. I don't kow how much it would cost to R&R at an actual place but a member here replaced one for $12 and some decent work.

This is why I use the parking brake from the get-go!

My mother is in fact the queen of habitual, 100% of the time parking brake use and I'm very careful about using mine on any sort of incline. Evidently the first owner of this car was not, which is sobering to consider since it's not like someone else was operating all the OTHER parts of this car! I have always said used car dealers are crooks... should have taken my own advice and not let her buy the car from Carmax. It's garbage exactly like this that their 'ultra-comprehensive million-point like-new inspection' should be checking. I should have taken notice of the issue sooner, too. So what, now does the transmission have to come out?

edit

Yeah it only requires force to come out of park. Definitely seems to me like the pawl.

I don't think the trans has to come out. It has do do with taking the side pan off and going from there..... I'll wait for Andrei to chime in

I think it has to do with the lever its self. my 1997 GTP was almost impossible to get out of gear. Sometime it took me 4-5 MIN to get it out of gear. It was just the Shifter its self!
