dtreize
Hi there. I've been reading this forum for around a year now and it been a awesome source of information so far. But this is my first time posting. I own a 1992 Regal 3.1. everything has been working fine until last winter. Every time i was taking the car for more than 10-15 mins, it would die on acceleration (kinda does like when you run out of fuel). After some diagnostic, I changed the ignition module for a used one from a 1988 Z24 in January. The issue went away. Last night, I was going to pickup a friend, and the car suddenly died on acceleration. Same issue. Car still crank, but nothing happens. I can hear the gaz pump when I turn the key and I can see the RPM gauge moving as I crank. All I have to do is to wait around an hour and it will start again as if nothing ever happened. The engine runs like a new one, no miss fire, no loss of power, excessive gaz consumption or fluids leaking. But i still cannot predict when its going to die as it is random (engine is always hot tho). Anyone got any idea about this? i thought about the ECM but I cannot find my spare :\ Please excuse my spelling.
White93z34
maybe another bad ignition module? I would also try changing out the crank sensor.
tornado_735
I would also suggest the crank sensor. Where are you from BTW?
dtreize
Yeah a friend pointed it out to me, that would be some terrible bad luck. As for the CPS, I believed the RPM gauge depend on it, and it seems to be working fine at all time. I could be wrong.

spiderw31
Heat can make the ICM get flaky when it is on it's way out. I think your used ICM is dying.
dtreize
Alright so i just got my crank position sensor (looks like they had one in stock). Anyone knows where this thing is located (If anyone got a picture it would be awesome)? I heard on the back of the engine block, right on top of the oil pan. But no matter how hard I look, I can't find it. As for spiderw31's reply. The ICM is the next thing I'm gonna look at (along with testing all the coil packs) if the crank sensor doesn't fix it. Update: I'm dumb, found a tutorial here http://www.w-body.com/showthread.php/16057-crankshaft-position-sensor-tutorial?highlight=crank+position+sensor Edited April 30, 2010 by dtreize
dtreize
So I changed the crank sensor, along with all 6 spark plugs (hey its so easy with the alternator off the car so why not). The old crank sensor one wasn't hard at all to remove and wasn't broken. I also took appart all 3 coil packs and the ICM, put it back together with fresh thermal compound. I checked the coils with a meter, they are all clocking at 6kohms (+/- 0.02kohms) on the wire side, and 0 ohm on the ICM side. Is is within GM specs? They sure do not look old. The CKP Sensor wires shows no resistance. I still need to drive around to see if it actually fixed anything. Thanks
terryk2003
i agree to checking the ignition module if the crank sensor didnt solve it already!
