coolant leak help please

i am sticking close to home til i get this fixed as i do not need to kill my car. and winter is fast approaching. supposed to get first frost this weekend and show is in the forcast for next week.

i took some pics but i have not uploaded them to the web yet. so i have desribe this the best i can til then.

the leak is between the thermostat housing and the firewall on the top of the block. under the sensor (i think it is the sensor). there is a hard cooling line the leaves a fitting near the tstat housing and it is leaking from there.

it started small but is getting increasingly more and more.

had to add coolant twice this week as the idiot light came on.

thanx in advance

Lower Intake Manifold Gasket?

Between the firewall + thermostat? Lot of space to deal with there...

Is it leaking on the block or dripping from somewhere else.

Need specifics / photos to help locate!

Look like a dealer item.

Those are the "quick-connect" fittings and the o-ring between the connections are shot.

Those go to the interior heater core correct?

Okay, I can tell ya why thats leaking. GM made them from pot-metal, not a smart choice in my opinion. The pot metal will get very brittle and weak over time, and eventually break, causing a leak. If it is coming from there, since there is no gasket material there, its not the lower intake gasket. A new one of those is not a dealer item. Go to advance with the old one to show them what you need. They sell them, but not made of pot metal, they are made of actual steel and are a direct replacement for the stock one and will last forever. It comes with all the O-rings and clips. I think mine was $9. Hope that helps

yes the throttle body is on the list to do before winter. as are plugs and mayb wires.

so this part that is leaking...what is it called?

do you think it would be on hand at many parts places?

as i am in the sticks.

in town we have napa, bumper to bumper, car quest.

dunno if i would trust the hour each way drive to grand forks to parts america.

would i have to take the part in or do ya think i could drag someone outside to look at it?

is this an easy part to replace and do i need special tools?

ok done with questions for now

You dont need any special tools to get it out, but you do need to remove the old one to put the new one in. Also, you would need to drain the coolant so it doesnt leak out. I dont really know the name of the part, Im going to guess like lower intake coolant fitting or something. Take the old one in and they'll know what it is. They should carry one, I mean Advance did, so I guess Napa would too

i will look at it in the morning and determine if i feel like walking the half mile to napa or not.

if not then i will just remove the intake hose and show them when i get there.

thanx for the help guys

is the top end cleaner something they might have as well or do i have to get that from a GM dealer?

might as well tackle that intake grime while i am there with it apart.

OK

so i find the part and it appears to be the correct one.

bumper to bumper knew exactly what i was after but would not have one til tuesday at earliest. that is if the wharehouse had one on hand to send.

NAPA was unsure of what i was talking about but when they pointed me at the fittings i found it.

about 8 bux with tax

so i get out there today and tear out the old one ready to put in the new one.

guess what happened?

that wonderful pot metal on the old one broke off at the threaded joint into the head or wherever it goes into.

so now i cannot go anywhere at all with my car til i get it fixed.

it was not exactly easy to remove the old one either. had to remove several items to get room to get in there.

soo

what is the best way to remove that broken piece without damage?

Alright, I had the same problem and I should have told you about it, I just forgot. Get an 4 pt. ease-out, the biggest one you can get, and try that. It worked for me. It'll take some fiddling with it to get it out, but it will work. Oh, it screws into the lower intake manifold

cool thanx for the help

guess she sits for a day or so

as no place is open in town that i could get this ease out at.

guess i will have to get a ride to/from work til i can get it fixed.

i cannot believe in how many places this shit metal is used.

wonder how many other places i will find it?

door handles has got to be the stoopidest place.

good thing i am trying to do this myself.

grrrr

i have yet to fix this.

right now many things in my engine bay are either partially disasembled or unhooked or something.

just not fun at all.

mayb i can get some mess pics later.

i just dunno.

a little discouraged that is for sure.

it looked like a simple enough project.

remove and replace a leaky fitting in the head.

turning into not so much fun

end rant now
