Car Security LED

Has anyone installed their own car security system? Basically all i want to do is wire an LED in the car to give the appearance that it has an alarm installed. Not sure how to wire it so the light only blinks when the car is off. Some sort of relay wired into the ignition? Also i have just regular leds can i make them blink or just buy a blinking blue led?

Thanks!

I don't know, but the amount of effort you'd have to put in just to make it so, you could just get an inexpensive alarm (with a quick look $30 is the cheapest I see), probably be easier.

Sorry I'm of no real help.

Haha, I dont know most cars that have security systems have a blue led that blinks. If a thief is going to break into your car and sees the led blinking, how is he to know that its not a real security sytem? Why pay $100 for an alarm when a $5 led will work just as well?

because if they do break the window, or hit the car when its parked. My alarm will sound, Letting me, And everyone else know, Something is up.

Yeah but how many people actually go out to look at a vehicle that has it's alarm going off. Most are like "Damn it hurry up and steal the POS. That alarm is interfering with my couch time".

I don't know about most people, but if my car alarm was going off, I would be going to look at it. My horn is fairly distinct from the rest in the neighbourhood as well.

Many years ago, every car in the neighborhood that was parked outside got broken into except mine. They even took the quarters out of my stepdad's truck. They started to try to get into it (screwdriver pry marks on the trim), but something made them stop. I think they noticed my alarm blinky light when they started prying. At the time, I had a Sony CDX-C90 which was a $750 HU. So moral of the story is a blinking light probably does work, at least, for the less daring thieves.

Anyway, you can go down to Radio Shack and get this self-contained blinky light for $3.99. It runs on AA batteries.

Here's a simple blinking LED for $1.49, but it'll need a resistor.

High brightness one for $1.99, it'll also need a resistor.

Of course, you can always get this kind of junk even cheaper from eBay.
