mjmich
I'm getting the timing belt replaced on my 3.4 Cutlass Supreme. The GM garage said the most it will cost is about $375-That doesn't include the tensioner although i think that i'll get that replaced too. I thought this sounded like a decent price for the job. Is there anything i should be leary of?
Redfox340
Mine ran about $500 with all new pulleys, actuator and labor. Sounds good to me! - Erik
SmokesGTP
500 is cheap as hell. Most places want close to a grand.
Redfox340
500 is cheap as hell. Most places want close to a grand. Most places don't know this motor exists. You've got to dig around and find some "underground" GM ASE mechanics. That's the route I took and was done in day-and-a-half. - Erik
Bolt_Crank
my uncle knows about it he works in a little town of about 40 people, as a mechanic, and he makes enough money to live.... (granted he gets normal salary from the CO-OP gas bar too, lol o.O) and at decent prices! I should ask him how much for my timing belt... bryanjoseph
I got my timing belt replaced at GM a couple of weeks ago and the technician botched it. The engine sounded funny and wouldn't rev up to 6000 rpm. To redo the job, they had to do about twice the labor. Not only did they have to take the belt off and put it back on, they had to take off the plenum, remove the valve covers, replace a sprocket, and re-time the engine. Then they made another mistake. By chance I discovered a broken tube for a vacuum line on the MAP sensor. Sure glad I didn't have to pay for their mistakes! So make sure the labor and parts come with a garuantee. Dotcutnup
I think that geographical location and market plays a large difference in price setting for certain cars in each area. For example, in my area, the average flat rate per hour is about 65.00 an hour(i think there are a few shops at 45 still). At the local GM dealership, it is 75.00 an hour. At the shop I run, it is 70.00 an hour, so hence, it varies greatly by location.
