91LuminaEuro
Ok, so i've got a 3100 out of a 96 Buick Regal, was my brother's old car, top end was just rebuilt and has decent miles on it (i can't remember off hand) Im still browsing for possible car replacements, if i can find a car cheap with a blown engine, i can drop this one down in and be good to go! So anybody know what cars/years this will be interchangeable with?
91LuminaEuro
I assume since its OBDII any of the GP's that would have come with the 3100 it will interchange as well as the impalas, but what years did they come with the 3100 and not the 3400? Also any other GM vehicles that used this engine and would easily swap this one in.
91LuminaEuro
Just looking in case something comes up cheap i can work with.
WhatTheFehl
Malibus used the 3100. Or any 96+ W. The Monte Carlo used the 3100 through 99, I'm not sure about the 2nd gen Montes though.
WhatTheFehl
I just saw an ad for a 97 Lumina in Valencia, PA on craigslist...

91LuminaEuro
Cool thanks! I'm gonna be picky as hell, especially because its not urgent YET.... So im specifically interestedin anythign 00+ if they used the 3100? Or was everything 3400/3800 ? In the w-body? Or a GP 98-00 if they used th 3100 in the SE? I know the Malibu 99+ used the 3100, so any other GM vehicles? This is all very IFFY but id like to know, because i browse craigslist like its my job..its almost a hobby...lol so if i see something i can maybe work something out. RobertISaar
GP's had the 3100 as a base motor until they went Gen3... i think centurys did as well. MC/Impala got nothing less than the 3400 starting in 2000. but the 00-up are LG8, not the L82 you have now.... slight differences, but enough to cause a headache if you were planning on a direct swap. 91LuminaEuro
I was hoping someone would have useful information such as this! So if i found a 98-99 GP with a 3100 mine would direct swap though? Just 00+ they're different?

Just 00+ they're different? any 96-99 3100 powered vehicle should be a direct swap(bar the mounts/exhaust/cooling lines depending on what it came from). EDIT: some late 99 N-cars got the large port 3100 early though...

MonteCarloChick
Malibus used the 3100. Or any 96+ W. The Monte Carlo used the 3100 through 99, I'm not sure about the 2nd gen Montes though. 2nd gen Montes came with a 350 or 454..
WhatTheFehl
Second gen W Montes...
MonteCarloChick
That's incorrect. Just say 6th gen Monte
WhatTheFehl
Well since this is a W body site, I just consider that the full run. A bunch of people consider what I consider a first gen GP as a first gen... I argue that a pre gen would be back in the A and G body days... MonteCarloChick
Pre gen is a stupid term. Generations go by the car, not the platform when talking about it in general. Otherwise state 2nd gen W-body Monte. But it's easier to say 6th gen.
WhatTheFehl
Meh, six to one - half dozen to the other. Most people here think sixth gen when one of us says second gen. I don't know, I'm not arguing . We used to have a fourth gen Cutlass Supreme, but I don't think anyone here cares about it.
RobertISaar
We used to have a fourth gen Cutlass Supreme, but I don't think anyone here cares about it. uhhh.... G-bodies are hot... especially once you start talking about stuff like the 83(?)-88 MC SS... and the olds and pontiac equivalents. and of course, everyone knows about the Regal T/GN/GNX... WhatTheFehl
Ours was an '83 with a 307, automatic transmission...

AL
Well I have a 99 GP with a blown motor... I might be interested in buying your motor if this parts car deal falls through
91LuminaEuro
Sounds like an idea, let me know if you're current deal falls through Al.
91LuminaEuro
Ok so I found a 2000 grand prix with a blown 3100. Concensus says my 96 isn't a direct swap. What would it take to swap them? I can pick the car up for cheap and its got low miles on the body.
White93z34
some could argue that the last "real" montie was made in 1988, or the early 70s depending how much of a purist you are. what we have on the w platform are 2 door luminas. i did not just go there [/derail] edit: to contribute, if you already have the engine you will just need to swap some of the brackets from the old engine to the new. some mounting points changed between gen1 and gen2, not many though. Edit2: would 2000 have the large port 3100? Edited May 4, 2010 by White93z34
