douellette
so today i decided since it was wicked nice out i would be cool and squeel the tires pulling out of a driveway. after i started going (after chirping the tires) it felt like the tranny was slipping or something. the gear or rpm didnt seem to match my speed. Sometimes i like to manually shift the gears too. i never start in "1", always "2" and then all the way to drive. also, every once in a while i can smell what appears to be hot tranny fluid while driving and then it goes away. Car has 163k miles on the original tranny i think. How hard is it to swap the tranny out/how long does it usually take? and will any 4t60e fit? RobertISaar
sticking the shifter into 1st actually raises line pressure quite a bit... another way of saying it can save that tranny from that kind of abuse... did it start acting normally later/after a restart? xtremerevolution
When was the last time you changed your fluid?

douellette
so if it does go, should i get a junkyard tranny? cause i really dont have the money for a rebuilt one since there like $800+. or should i just find one and have a shop partially rebuild it? like just new seals? just the pump, etc.? Jonpro03
Obviously, junkyard trans are hit and miss. If you have the means to swap in a junkyard trans by yourself, go ahead. If you don't want to have to do it every 2 years... better get it rebuilt first
douellette
i mean ive rebuilt 2 transmissions on my own before (in school), but i dont think i have the proper tools to do it. what would i be lookin at for a basic rebuild (cost and parts i would need)? i checked the transmission fluid this morning (cold and engine not running). i know theres plenty in there. but i cant tell if its burnt or im just smelling the tranny fluid. theres some gray dusty type stuff in the fluid on the dipstick tho. not a ton, just some. Addicted To Boost
The fluid should be bright red and should be checked with the transmission hot, idling in park after driving at least 10 miles.

douellette
drove it off and on all day today and i dont think it acted up at all. ive found a tranny from an intrigue with 60k miles on it, according to wikipedia its a 4t65e and my cutlass is supposed to be a 4t60e, will that tranny swap right in? or would the computer have to be changed or something? BXX
Wont work, you need a W-body 3100 4T60e (3.33FDR). Go for the same year as yours. Although, im sure 94-97 is the same. Im not even sure if you can use a LQ1 4T60e.. Not sure if they used the same FDR.

RobertISaar
all LQ1 4T60Es were 3.43 gears...
douellette
isnt the final drive in these trannys the same as a rear end in a RWD? so a higher number would just mean better acceleration?
RobertISaar
when it comes to differentials, larger numbers mean you'll be at a higher RPM to maintain the same speed, assuming the TCC is locked for an auto. example being that changing FDR alone from 3.33 to 3.43 will raise the RPM at 55MPH from 1650 to 1725 RPM... it may not even be that extreme either, but i haven't done the math.
