LQ1 Valve Cover Gaskets

As many of you know, I just got finished replacing the timing belt on my '95 LQ1.

I ran into a minor problem I need to figure out. I replaced the valve cover gaskets, or at least attempted to. I bought a Fel-Pro kit from RockAuto when I bought the timing set for the car.

When I went to install the valve cover gaskets, I ran into a problem with the front gasket. It would not fit the valve cover! Comparing it to the old gasket, it appears that it was intended for a differently shaped valve cover. At the right top of the valve cover, my cover drops away to allow clearance for the cam sensor. I'm assuming that earlier engines that did not have the cam sensor had a differently shaped valve cover?

Anyhow, I was so close to getting the thing running, and could not find a different valve cover gasket, so I reused the old gasket. After a week of driving, the gasket is leaking. Every car part place I've checked wants to sell me the same Fel-Pro kit that had the wrong gasket in the box. Does anyone know what kit would have the proper gasket, or did I do something wrong? I'm thinking I should say it's a '96, which appears to have a different P/N, but I wasn't sure if that would work...

I had the same issue when I did new gaskets on my 94 LQ1 last summer. I mistakenly ordered a set for a 92 engine which was shaped for the valve cover without the cutout for the cam sensor. I simply put some silicone on the back and forced it to take the shape of the 94 valve cover. My main concern was that it would be able to sit flat against the head, and it did. It's been dry for 15,000 miles. Where did you get them from? Sounds like they gave you a gasket set for a 91-93 engine.

I got them from Rockauto, but according to the box, they are supposedly for 91-95.

I didn't think of it at the time...wasn't '95 the first year for the cam sensor on the LQ1?

So, if I got valve cover gaskets for a '96, should that be the right one? I know there were several changes to the LQ1 in '96..were the valve covers the same as '95?

Yes it was

NO!!!

91-93 LQ1s have no cam or secondary crank sensor.(obd 1)

94-94 LQ1s have a cam sensor in the front carrier and a secondary crank sensor at the drive pulley. (obd1.5, including 94 luminas)

The valve covers ARE different, but the gaskets are the same. Yes, you have to force em in place.

96 is a redesign where things changed alot more, and would then have different gaskets.
