Trans is in, but have a couple of issues...

Transmission is in the new Monte, but I have a couple of things I need to ask here about.

First off, if you drive the car like normal, it drives good. Assume you come to a rolling stop (like I always do) then go to step on the gas at about 20-25 it feels like it is slipping, then jerks into gear. It also feels like the other upshifts are harsh. First gear also doesn't feel right; the second shift seems to come early.

Is there some kind of a computer re-learn to do after it's in? Or possibly a detent cable that needs to be adjusted to firm the downshifts? Or is it possible that my used 77k transmission is junk? The fluid was clean when we took it apart, and we replaced it with new fluid/filter.

I need to know what to do before I call the shop that put it in tomorrow...TIA

BTW, it's my 98 Monte with the 3800/4T65E

Filled with correct fluid to proper level, yes. It was a j/y transmission from a very well known yard here in town, with a 90 day warranty on it. It is not rebuilt to the best of my knowledge. I looked up the VIN through GM VIS and it definitely calls for a 4T65E for my particular car.

I will say this, after driving it a little bit tonight, it drives a ton better. The shifts are normal now, and the ONLY thing it is doing that is strange, is from 1-6 mph it still feels like it is slipping, but only if you are rolling. If you stop the car completely, it doesn't do it at all.

I am still going to call the shop to see what they think tomorrow, and I will ask my tranny guy at work too what he thinks. I just am trying to avoid looking like a fool if it is a relearn or something.

But a side question, wtf? I thought these 3800's all came with 4T65E's in Montes? What are the differences between a 4T60E vs a 4T65E?

They did. The only mix year was 97 in the Grand Prix's (and any other car having the 3.8) that had the 4T60 that year. 98-on had the 65.

Main difference at a glance is look for the electrical connector for the trans. The 4T65 will plug in to the top of the center of the trans (beneath the throttle body) And the 4T60 will be plugged in somewhere in the side (front of the car)

I've personally seen a 98' L36 w-body with a 4t60e. I can't imagine many were made that way though. a 4t60e is identifiable by the vacuum modulator on the front of it.

Do you know perchance what year car the trans came out of and miles?

Without having someone open it up and see, Only thing I can really think is to make sure the trans wiring harness is in good shape with no corrosion.

Is it safe to assume that you changed the fluid and filter while it was apart? did you have the TQ checked out at all? Does it lockup at the appropriate times? Are you sure this trans has the same gear ratio as the OE one did? (IIRC a 98' Z34 should have 3.29 gears)

Took it back to the junkyard today (in the car so they could drive it) and they are putting another one in on Wed. It is getting worse the more I drive it.

But they were really cool about it, and are getting me a 60k one, (current bad one has 77k) and installing it for no charge since it is still under warranty. So I am pretty happy about that at this point. I will keep everyone posted here when I get it back.
