Best way to replace coils in 3.4 DOHC?

I've heard it's a PITA to replace the coils in these cars, since they're below the exhaust manifold. Is there an easy way to go about this, or is it going to be a bitch any way I do it? And what tools do I need? I just bought jack stands and a good LED flash light. I have a 201 piece mechanics tool set I got from my brother for Christmas, so hopefully I don't need much else. Thanks in advance!

About all I can think of would be to remove the cooling fans to make space. Otherwise, it really shouldn't be too bad.

yeah, but do yourself a favor and extend the wires and mount the coils/ICM on the wheel well, or one of the 10K other places under the hood that would have been a better place compared to right under an exhaust manifold.

LoL I won't be doing that tomorrow, cuz I just wanna get it running right. When I have more time, I'll be doing a re-location mod :) And the cooling fans aren't a big deal...it's the AC lines that might make it a bitch.

Total waste of time IMHO. For as little as they need service its just not worth it.

I usually pull the cooling fans, then use a 5.5 mm socket and extension to get at them myself. PITA but I can think of much worse.

Yes just pull the fans and use the 5.5MM socket and extensions if needed and pull the coils and ICM off the bracket.. I just changed the ICM and coils on my TGP and did it that way but i didnt have to remove the fans or anything.. I also used a 1/4 air ratchet and boy it was easy..

The car is on jack stands now, but I have a shitty little jack that doesn't go very high, but there's enough room to get under the car, just not very much room...I need a better jack!

Below is quoted from my post in your other thread:

With all the various things I've had to do on my car, I can't count how many times I've pulled the coil packs out. I've always just reached down from the top and removed the bolts from the top and bottom of the packs and pulled them out. To get more room and minimize cutting up your hand on all the sharp edges, moving one of the radiator fans out of the way helps.

There is a small 5.5MM bolt top and bottom of each pack, the bottoms are the harder ones to get at. I use a 1/4" drive ratchet with a couple different length extensions (1" - 3", or flexible) as needed. Pull the bottom bolts out first since they are easier if the coil is still attached, and do one coil at a time. The coils are the only things that hold the ICM to the back plate, and it is a juggling act if you have to hold it lined up while trying to get a coil pack back on.

One more thing; you probably will want to disconnect the battery for this job because the starter motor is right below the packs. Spin a ratchet just wrong, tap the power line or solenoid, and you'll get a big surprise!

Ken's idea of a mirror is good too. :high5:

Pulling these is a pain the first time, but gets easier every time. I can swap out ICMs now in roughly 20min now
