Tap Tap Tap.....Cutlass is telling me something

Either it doesn't like Pennzoil synthetic or it doesn't like doing 1200km / week (pretty much all really easy highway 55 - 60 MPH on cruise)

Started making this tapping sound a couple weeks ago, changed the oil to Mobil 1 synthetic no change. Most audible at idle. Almost sounds like a dry lifter. Fuel ecomony is not affected. Still makes the same power and pulls strong to redline.

Video makes it sound pretty bad. Ran synthetic in it since I bought it at 61000 km two years ago. 5000 km change intervals. Has 94000 km (58k miles ish) on it now (its just a baby!) Still driving it 1200km / week as I'm working away from home. Hoping at the minimum it gets me through until April when I pull out my other cars.....

So either it just happily keeps running making this sound, or it gets worse and I'll buy a crate LQ1 or sell the car outright and get a new DD.

thoughts?

hm, could be lifter.

try putting some tranny fluid in it. We've done that to my stepmoms olds bravada with the 4.3 cause it was making a noise like that and after we put some tranny fluid in it stopped making the noise.

Mine tapped since I got it at 69k. It has always been the lifters, happens most of the time but sometimes is silent. A couple weeks ago (a little over 77k), it sheared at least one (probably two) of those lifters off plugging the oil filter. It's had AmsOil in it since I got it and is only driven about 2,500 miles a year.

Do you just run straight synthetic in it or do you also put in an additive, like Lucas? They make a synthetic oil stabilizer in addition to the conventional stuff. What about Rislone?

Almost sounds like my old Cutlass... sound anything like this??

The engine let go very soon after this.

EDIT: never mind - just watched that video again, yours doesn't sound nearly as bad.

Thanks for the replies, the cat has never been run low on oil. It seems the sound is more predominant when the car is at operating temp. Whether that's due to the idle being lower I don't know. That vid was at operating temp.
