xtremerevolution
Couple of quick questions. 1. when draining the transmission fluid, how much will I need to put back in? 2. what type of transmission fluid is recommended for my car? WhatTheFehl
I would just go with good old Dexron III. Although if you want to go with an upgrade, AMSOIL makes a universal "long life" synthetic ATF, but its about $10/quart. http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/atf.aspx My guess is about 7 quarts if you just change the fluid (not a flush). Don't quote me on that though, I'm sure someone else knows for sure.
Night Fury
It says in the owners manual It gives 2 figures.... pan drop and full flush numbers.
xtremerevolution
It says in the owners manual It gives 2 figures.... pan drop and full flush numbers. Not if you don't have one. I need to know how much will drain out during a pan drop, so I know how much to buy.

RobertISaar
alldata says 7.4 quarts pan capacity and for a full overhaul, 10 quarts... i would use DEXRON VI...
WhatTheFehl
alldata says 7.4 quarts pan capacity and for a full overhaul, 10 quarts... HAH! Damn I'm good I'd say Dexron III because that's what its got now. If you wanna keep the original stuff, then that's your winner. We changed the fluid in the '98 S10 at work at 200K, used Dexron III as its what the OE recommends. But like I said, I'd probably do synthetic myself. I'll pick that up with a transmission filter. Any preference on transmission filters? Or are they all the same?
WhatTheFehl
I'd say Hastings or WIX. Frankly, its 6 to one and a half dozen to the other IMHO. Just get a good quality brand, not the economy line crap.
RobertISaar
WIX filters FTW! make sure you grab the box that includes the gasket. a couple years ago when i did the MC, there were two part numbers, aparently, 1 does NOT include it... your trans cooler may add quite a bit of capacity as well... Does the trans cooler drain when you're draining the pan? I'm assuming 8 quarts should cover it.
WhatTheFehl
I'd say just get a case of fluid. It doesn't hurt to have some extra on hand for an emergency.

I have a gallon of Advance Auto brand Dexron IV right now, so I can certainly keep that as spare fluid, and it would certainly be easier if I could buy all of this in gallon jugs instead of quart sized containers like motor oil. 99screaminregal
Lucas makes a good oil to. about $6 qt. I'm using it now in my 4T60-E and love it so far. Shifts nice and smooth. It's universal too.
RobertISaar
Does the trans cooler drain when you're draining the pan? I'm assuming 8 quarts should cover it. i can't remember the orientation of the lines, but depending on how high above the pan it is, it could, but i wouldn't expect a lot. if they make a "J" like they do on the MC, then i would say it's not going to drain much if at all...
