99screaminregal
Ok, having a problem with my brakes. I start the car in the morning and pull out. When I hit the brakes at the turn in my apt. complex, the pedal barely moves and hits a wall, like it's over pressured. Can barely stop and have to stand on the pedal to stop . Stop at the sign at the exit and same thing. Go down the road a ways and stop at the next sign and perfect Pump the brakes to slow for the moron on his cell in front of me and, here we go again......... Seems like caliper hanging up or booster may be shot, something wrong with the vacuum maybe? Stopped in the Zone to ask what could be going on and he says brake booster or check its valve. Oh yeah, no ABS
Crazy K
Go start the car while you have your foot pressing on the brake. Does the pedal effort change when you do so? Rev the engine while holding the brake pedal. Does the pedal effort change when you do so? under the hood you have the brake booster, and the vacuum line going to it with a check valve there. Pull the check valve loose from the booster and see if you hear a whoosh of air from the booster. remove the check valve from the line and see if you can physically blow air in only one direction though the valve... I'll do that in the morning. It's like 10 degrees out and I'm nice and warm So, if the effort changes, like it should, booster should be good right? Cuz engine vacuum should regulate. If it doesn't, and check valve is theoretically good, booster is bad. If air goes one way on the valve, valve is good. Replace booster. Will check the valve on lunch break if at all possible. Another day, another dollar.
Crazy K
tip: I have sprayed the innards of the valve with tire-shine type products before. it might help. I swapped a spare into one car i had and it made a difference. dry rot of the rubber in the valve is a bitch.
