Update on my Transmission... wow!

I have been reading so many articles and posts of people rebuilding a transmission only for it to happen again. This is why I am thinking it's not the transmission itself but something else.

Well... it is back. The car takes a considerable amount of time to engage first gear out of park after being put into drive. The car will move if I put it in 1st but it punches when it engages 1st and revs really high (as if stuck in neutral) when shifting into 2nd from 1st and vice versa (which it punches again). The car just started doing this after all this time.

You paid money for a diagnosis.

You did not get a proper diagnosis.

I would haul my ass to the Canadian version of small-claims court, and/or whatever Canadian automotive repair consumer complaints division the Government might have.

You got taken to the cleaners.

"I" would never in a million years have paid for a flush, a filter kit AND eight quarts of fluid; the $200 for the flush was A) excessive; and B) should have been all-inclusive.

Is it legal in Canada to put "Misc" on the bill and add fifty bucks? Pretty sure in America, everything has to be charged out item-by-item.

He'd have a tough go of it, I think...the original diagnosis was over two years ago, I'd say he's been lucky for two years of trouble-free service...

Well here is the thing. The Chevy/Cadillac dealership which has been there for years folded last year. The Pontiac dealership down the road is now a Chevy/Cadillac/GMC dealership and they are turning the former GM corner dealership into a FORD dealership by the same owner. So no chance for small claims there.

I gotta find another transmission. Not sure if a yard around here is going to provide a reasonable replacement. ZZP seems to have the only offering but $$$$ for shipping let alone 2K for a gearb@x.

You'll probably notice your fluid is going to turn nasty again...at which point I would change it again (yourself this time). All the fucked fluid is going to mix with new stuff and anything that gets cleaned out in the process should be removed as well to avoid it causing issues elsewhere.
THIS! Fluid and filter!

What you're describing though, is exactly what my trans was doing before it completely let go.

120 bucks and a few hrs in a treasure yard and I had myself a decent trans with lower miles. There are some things to look for when hunting for a trans in a junkyard. The biggest one is low miles. Pop the pans off too. Yes it's a lot of bolts but what's inside can tell you a lot.

A rebuild is gonna cost $1800.

Finding a transmission around here is like trying to find a whole 1st gen W-body in yard.

Where exactly are you located?

Drive a car for a couple of winters here without any copious amount of rust protection and you will see the start of corrosion due to the climate and use of salt on the roads and the constant freeze/thaw cycle. The roads are also in poor shape which beats a regular vehicle and excellerates the degradation of mounts, joins and seals. Generally vehicles here rot from the inside out.

General idea here is that you have a vehicle for winter and don't care what happens to it and drive the good one in the summer. Further north there isnt the constant freeze/thaw so vehicles are not attacked as much.

If you let a vehicle sit outside for a year that is not new. It will suffer. The older it is the worst it takes these conditions.

Yards are only as good as the freshest pick. There are a lot of yards here that just have garbage for cars (abundance of Cavaliers and Neons).

The only yard with reasonable pickings is a good 45 mins away.

Cars that last more than 10 years are rare here. Ones that are 8+ are usually rolling piles of crap if the owner drives them on a regular basis.

I remember the winters in Maine, a huge amount of snow that stayed around for a very long time. Have you ever considered looking in Maine for your trans? I know it's a long drive from you, but you should be able to find a good deal there...especially in this economy.

Necro post. Transmission fixed last week.

Unit was replaced with a remanufactured and updated unit. System flushed and codes cleared.

Car runs better than when I bought it. Seems what I thought were normal noises was in fact audible warnings that the unit was about to die.

The unit has a 12 month warranty and I still drive it carefully like I did before replacement.

Final bill was $2600.

It was a tough call. The only option was spend $10000 on another vehicle or $30000 on a new one. I just don't have that now that I am just out of college and starting a new career/job.

Thanks for all of your input on this folks. :)
