Radnsmash
99 Monte Z34, 3800II w/ 121,700 on the dash, this morning, oil light, big ticking noise, look outside the car and theres oil on the ground. I had no time to look @ it because I had to get to school. What do you think we're looking at here, oil pan gasket? oil pan?
sloick
some scored bearings now that you drove like that. never a good idea. if it still does it pour some more oil in it and see what it does.
Radnsmash
No today I didnt drive it, It was running for maybe 30 seconds before I shut it off after seeing the OIL light.
jimmyfloyd
Oil light indicated that it is low on oil. Oil on the ground indicates that it is coming out rather than being burned. The ticking noise could be lifter tick cause there is no oil getting to the top end. If you haven't driven it, check the oil level, and add oil to get it up to the proper level. Check under the car to make sure oil did not immediately end up on the ground (did this on a sunbird with a hole in the block. That's how I found the hole.) if the oil is not, then the leak isn't probably a fast one, and you may be say taking it small distances, but you would want to check the oil often (possibly as often as every time to drive it) and keep extra oil in the trunk til you can pinpoint the source and remedy it. If you have driven it, there is a good chance that you've done more damage. Without knowing what the "tick" sounds like, it may have been closer to knocking. I would IMMEDIATELY add oil to it to get it up to lever, and then follow the same things mentioned above until solved and hope nothing major happened. Luckily, the low oil light *should* come on before there is no oil, but there are no guarantees on that. Good luck and let us know.
Radnsmash
My dad was home today and did a bit of research; it appears that the culprit is an "oil pressure regulating valve" because theres way too much pressure going to the oil filter. blowing the gasket on the oil filter right out. How could i go about fixing this?
Crazy K
buy a better oil filter? was it a fram? It sounds like it is an oil filter quality problem. stick an new filter on and go. Advnaced has quality filters in stock, like purolator, or the in store purolator made filter they have behind the counter, for $1.99. tornado_735
Could you maybe have some oil passages blocked?
Radnsmash
It could be something like that. I still have yet to fix my LIMG and such so is this possible?
Crazy K
ok, since you have had TWO fail, yes, you must have a problem. How does it blow? pics?
Radnsmash
it blows in an upward motion, think of like a whales funnel, it depends what direction the gasket on the oil filter blows out. but the oil shoots out from the oil filter. Crazy K
could you have an unclear gasket surface? this sounds like what can happen if a prior filter left it's ring on the block and the new filter went on...
Radnsmash
No my dad wouldve checked for that. its apparently something in the oil pump thats not opening up..
Radnsmash
http://www.10w40.com/questions/auto-problems-questions/99-firebird-6-cyl-oil-pressure-goes-all-the-way-up-and-blows-oil Well I think this explains it all. Not so sure if I want to fix this. The engines going to have to come out and I know of no one that can help me do this. AND THE WORST PART OF IT ALL is that this weekend I was going to FINALLY fix the LIMGs and replace the intake manifold...guess that wont be happening. I think I've about had it with this thing. If anyone is looking for parts, let me know.
