supertrick_05
I've been contemplating all of these swaps that I'd like to do in the GP, and I'm not sure on a few things. I know the 3800 will bolt up to a 284 trans, but will a 3400? I thought I read that the 282 will work, but a 284 won't. Can someone confirm this? I don't want to convert all of 284 stuff out for a weaker transmission...
RobertISaar
all 660s and the 3800 and derivatives have the same bellhousing pattern... i don't see why it wouldn't work. and i would drop a 3500 in, extra ~20HP from the start with the much better flowing heads... 19Cutlass94
If you have the extra money for the 3500. If not, a 3400 is still a solid start.
GOT2B GM
Pulling the LQ1 out of that car, and replacing it with a pushrod engine?
supertrick_05
Wow...the 3500 is actually quite cheap in the JY's around here. About $500 for a 50,xxx mile engine! Hmmm...I may have to investigate a little more.

RobertISaar
and make sure it's not the VVT version!
Crazy K
and make sure it's not the VVT version! how can you tell? there is a malibu MAXX that has been sitting in a yard near me.... since it was a year old with a 3500...
supertrick_05
Yeah, I was looking at the LX9. The LZE has much more power, but has the VVT. Why would I have to replace the head gaskets already? Are they just a bad design or something?
RobertISaar
and make sure it's not the VVT version! how can you tell? look for a cam phaser on the timing cover. if it's there, it's gotta be VVT.

I don;t know what that is! is there an RPO difference between the engines? look for a cam phaser on the timing cover. if it's there, it's gotta be VVT. RobertISaar
cam phaser is a black "cylinder" on the timing cover, about where the tensioner would be on a earlier 3x00... the only 3500s that were NOT VVT were the LX9s...
GOT2B GM
What is VVT and what's wrong with it? Variable Valve Timing. Involves a bunch more wiring and tuning I'm assuming
RobertISaar
Involves a bunch more wiring and tuning I'm assuming not a whole lot more wiring, but tuning would be an issue unless you're good with electronics or happen to have the PCM intended to run it... Hmmm...I may have to investigate a little more. You do realize most junkyards take about 50k miles off of all their motors and make a majority of them all say under 100k because everyone seems to think a motor with more than 100k on it is junk. 19Cutlass94
When you buy the motor and tear into it, you can learn alot about how it was treated.
