reaper82 Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 1995 lumina 3.1 w/ 130k orig motor / trans I noticed that the the check engine light shuts on and off when I am driving down the hiway but it was every so often and finally it has stayed on. Never replacedthe converter and the vehicle does has a scent that's not right coming from the exhaust. But what got me is that I have an idle prob. For a few weeks the car overall runs but when I start it up the idle is fine and then readjust almost after 5-10 seconds of running. Occasionally the car does have full power like before ehn I give it gas. I got some plugs for it but haven't changed it so im hoping that will do it. But maybe the idle air senso could play a a part? Galaxie500XL Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 You really need to hook up to a scantool, and see what it tells you. There are several possibilities that can cause the issue you are having, and parts are a little expensive, best bet is to have it scanned. If there's an Advance Auto Parts, or Autozone in your town, they scan for free. Might save you a ton of money. Many other parts stores will also scan your car, usually for free, because they want to be the one to sell you a part. Let us know the results, there's a lot of experience here on this board, not too many things that come up haven't been dealt with before. Quote
tornado_735 Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 1995 is OBD1.5 right? Auto Zone doesn't have the ability to scan 1.5. Quote
reaper82 Posted January 4, 2010 Author Report Posted January 4, 2010 I work for autozone and we only do obd2. Advance offers the same here. I saw the sticky on converting obd 2 but that doesn't help me now. I am going to try with the basics first. Air filter, plugs, fuel filter, wires, and a new pcv. Thanks for saying they don't scan, you posted as I was hitting submit. Quote

Galaxie500XL Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 If there's an Advance Auto Parts in his town, they can...they scanned my '95 LQ1 for me before I bought it. They weren't very much help in explaining the results, but it was enough information for me to fix my problem, which turned out to be a bad evaporative purge solenoid, the coil was open. Cost me $5.00 for a replacement at the junkyard. I work for autozone and we only do obd2. Advance offers the same here. I saw the sticky on converting obd 2 but that doesn't help me now.
