How to build a dohc CAI without battery or washer relocation

i found that when you remove the air box there is a nice little 3in gap that runs in front of the fans so if you dont use any larger than 3in pipe you are fine

step 1 it is pretty strait forward just cut you piping how you want it you cant really mess this up. i decided to use just the stock hose and ad on to it to save time and money so off off the maf a 9 in 80* bend will be perfect and angle it down so the intake is running at an diagonal

step 2 then you need just about 4 in of strait pipe if you are useing a 9in long filter like me

and then since the filter will hit the fan you need to ad a 70-90* bend to get it down a bit lower but not have the filter scraping the ground

end result the easiest intake you have ever built

I tried that once. It didn't work very well. I ended up having to clean the damned thing every other week, and mine was actually inside the bumper. Good luck. That filter will be trashed in a month at best.

i was going to buy a prefilter

Even so, you will get a LOT more dirt sucking in air from that low to the ground than you would inside the engine bay or the fenderwell. I hope that's not a K&N filter. That thing will dry out in no time.

I would really like to do this...but I am a bit concerned about the filter being that close to the road. It would probably

pick up so much dust and dirt it would really clog it up and maybe see less air flow.

A dirty/clogged filter can cause a lot of problems, like rough idling, and poorer mpgs. But I guess if you constantly

monitor the filter and keep it clean it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Doesn't that length of pipe negate any gains?

I think the purpose would be air density from cooler air. Underhood air temperatures are fairly high. You can gain a decent amount of power by sucking in colder air. The number of bends are a bit high, but if the pipes are mandrel bent, they should maintain a decent velocity.

lookin' good! :high5:

like everyone else said, it will pick up dirt but as long as you take care of it (and if anybody looks at your car its clear that you will) you shouldnt have any problems!

Looks really good but it won't work for all DOHC's, I'm pretty sure 91-93 LQ1s like mine have a tray above the condenser for the air box to bolt to which is welded to the battery tray. At least mine does, I know that much.

I recommend you get rid of the rubber intake tube at the top eventually, otherwise, looks killer! Way to think outside the (air)box!

To try and limit the dirt on the filter. Look into a "sock" to go over the filter. AFE makes them as well as several other companies. It keeps the larger particles and junk from even making it to the filter. It won't be perfect, but could greatly increase cleaning intervals with the filter in that location.
