tdvs Posted December 14, 2009 Report Posted December 14, 2009 Has anyone tryed using one of these kits on their taillights or gauge cluster lense? Thanks Tom Quote
oscar_wilde Posted December 14, 2009 Report Posted December 14, 2009 I have used it on faded head lights. It does work but it does not perform miracles. I have found if you use it in combination with active glass cleaner, you get a pretty nice and clear head light. However, you will never get the great results that sanding will give you. For instance, on my car, the driver's side head light is almost noticeably clearer compared to the driver's side. Quote

tdvs Posted December 14, 2009 Author Report Posted December 14, 2009 Since the kits are specially for headlights, I'd expect they'd work pretty good on them. It's taillight lenses and gauge cluster lenses I'm wondering about. Are they the same plastic? I've got an extra pair of CS lip tails, one has a couple of minor scuffs, and a cluster len. Guess I'll just have to try myself and see. I'll probably buy the "Meguiar's" kit since it comes with a cool little buffing wheel Quote

cutty Posted December 15, 2009 Report Posted December 15, 2009 I would think they would work the same on taillights as they do on headlights, not sure about the gauge cluster lenses though. Quote

I would have to agree. On my Lumina, I used some cleaner on the plastic clear lense, and it fogged it right up. It really bothered me, it never went away. I would say be careful of what you use, because everything is out to get you. Quote

I don't want ruin an otherwise good one. Maybe I'll find a good size piece of taillight lens at the j/y to experiment on Quote

I forgot to mention I have used active glass cleaner on many tail lights before without any negative effects. Unless you count cleaning them negative, which I wouldn't. I also use it on lenses for turn signals and fog lights. Quote
Galaxie500XL Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 I've had surprisingly good success using Mother's Mag and Aluminum polish and a SOFT rag, like microfiber. It also does a decent job polishing scratches out of the radio display plastic...just remember, easy does it. You can't put material back once you remove it with an abrasive, even a fine one like Mother's. Since the kits are specially for headlights, I'd expect they'd work pretty good on them. Garrett Powered Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 you cant put material back on once you remove it? why not? I sanded off my plastic fog lights and scuffed the tails and refinished them. if you use automotive clearcoat then you are putting material on that will be durable shiny transparent restored correctly. cluster lens is in the junkyard. they come off the cluster with small screws Quote

Easier said than done. I'm doing a custom gauge install that required the bottom corners of the lens to be notched for clearance. I just want to clean it a bit to give it a new look. I have a spare lens to practice on. Quote
