supertrick_05 Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 Hey guys, I'm a new proud owner of a '92 GP SE with a 3.4 DOHC and a Getrag 284 5-speed. The car has 171,xxx miles and I'd like to do a tune-up. I'd like to replace the fuel filter, change plugs/wires, check all of the belts, flush/change all fluids, and I'm going to make a custom intake for it with a K&N cone filter. Is there any specifics I should check on the car other than listed? I guess I don't know much about these engines, but I've heard they are troublesome. Also, which spark plugs and wires do you guys prefer for the 3.4? Quote
AL Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 AC Delco Rapidfires for the plugs... Make sure you check the timing belt as one of the first things you do... You probably dont need to change every fluid but I would change the tranny fluid and oil and possibly coolant Quote
AL Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 You need to use Synchromesh fluid in the 284, Its expensive but so is another tranny... Quote
Andrew Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 checking the timing belt should be the very first thing on the list with that many miles. Quote
94 olds vert Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 checking the timing belt should be the very first thing on the list with that many miles. I will x2 that. If its frayed or starting to fray you might want to replace it. Quote
spiderw31 Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 Timing belt is a must check item. Losing the belt while running could be a very expensive repair. For plugs and wires, AC Delco Rapidfires as mentioned, and AC Delco plug wires. The wires are a bit more expensive than others, but the other brands just don's seem to fit right. They let all kinds of crap fall down the plug holes. Quote
supertrick_05 Posted December 14, 2009 Author Report Posted December 14, 2009 Ok, so AC Delco Rapidfire plugs, AC Delco wires, change oil, coolant and trans fluid, and check the timing belt? Is that it? Isn't there some kind of o-ring or plug of some sort that is notorious for leaking fluids? Quote
White93z34 Posted December 14, 2009 Report Posted December 14, 2009 I'll second most parts store branded plug wires fitting like hell. I've always just ran run of hte mill ACD plugs myself. as for that O ring get a flashlight and look down under the TB and between the engine and the crossover pipe you should be able to see it through there, and yes it is good for leaking oil everywhere.
