supertrick_05 Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 I'm going to be looking at a 1992 Grand Prix tomorrow with a 3.4 and the 284 5-speed transmission. The car has high miles, so if the engine decides to go out on it, could it be replaced by the LQ1 from a '96 car? I heard they had better flowing intake systems and they switched to a different fuel injection, and a few other little things. Could the '96 engine bolt up and plug-n-play in the '92 car with the 5-speed? Quote
GOT2B GM Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 it will bolt up, but not be plug and play (OBD 1 in the 92 , OBD 2 in the 96) Quote
supertrick_05 Posted December 11, 2009 Author Report Posted December 11, 2009 Hmmmm...a screw the LQ1...if I'm gonna put in another engine, it might as well be something worth putting in...an L67 Quote

supertrick_05 Posted December 11, 2009 Author Report Posted December 11, 2009 Has anyone done an L67/284 combo swap here? Quote
1990lumina Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 Has anyone done an L67/284 combo swap here? Kuntzie I believe has Quote
Andrew Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 you can use the newer LQ1, just gotta swap some stuff over from the old one. Quote
kuntzie Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 turbo l26 (3.8) with the 284 in my 01 and turbo 3.1 with the 284 in my 89. both work well Quote
GOT2B GM Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 Turbo a LQ1 and eat L67's for breakfast. Quote
RobertISaar Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 Turbo a LQ1 and eat L67's for breakfast. WIN. a 96 engine in a 92 car: electrically, pretty easy, the EGR and possibly the coolant temp sensor will be a minor setback. Quote

supertrick_05 Posted December 13, 2009 Author Report Posted December 13, 2009 Turbo a LQ1 and eat L67's for breakfast. No way...I'd rather have a great engine to start with, supercharged at that, than to put money into turbo'ing one of the worst-feared engines that GM has ever made. Quote

AL Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 Its the worst feared engine that GM has ever made and you have 2 of them... Hmmm Quote
RobertISaar Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 Its the worst feared engine that GM has ever made and you have 2 of them... Hmmm awesome. pure, 100%, liquid awesome. failure to perform required, scheduled maintnence accounts for MOST problems with the LQ1... Quote
94 olds vert Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 My lq1 runs great. I do basic maintenance and then some. Quote
AL Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 Spray paint doesnt count ^^^ Kidding! Quote

White93z34 Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 Stop, No and don't. I will not let this thread devolve into yet another thread where everyone has to wank about how one engine is better then the other. Keep it on topic, please. Quote
Jonpro03 Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 Wouldn't the CPS need to be changed? Quote
AL Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 Sorry Chris... 94GPGTP is doing the exact swap your talking about right now... You would have to convert to OBD2 and follow his thread for the wiring for the manual Quote
Brian P Posted December 14, 2009 Report Posted December 14, 2009 Stop, No and don't. I said, biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttttttchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Someone should get that one... Quote
