no muffler = bad MPG?

Can someone please explain why having no muffler on a car would hurt its fuel economy? Does it have to do with backpressure?

Yes it does, With no muffler or cat for that matter, too much of the mixture exits the combustion chamber before it is ignited causing a loss in MPG
