gregsta565
Hi, im new to this, not sure if this is where i should post, but im only 20, and i want to do my first engine swap, i have a 96 cutlass supreme with a 3.1 and i want to put a 3.8 sc in it, i heard the series 1 would be easier to do, is this correct? also what would all be needed? i can get a totalled buick with series 1, so i could take everything from that.. would i need its tranny? i dont know how hard this will be, and am wondering how long this would take since i would be without a car until its done, thanks
3.1cutlass
Its quite a bit of work. Yes you need the trans. You need everything motor related from that car and a bunch of wiring. It is not easy task by any means. Most guys talk about it and never do it. Night Fury
A) Don't bother with the series I sc'd 3800, it isn't worth the hassle. Go with the series II or III You don't want to do this if it is your only car....
gregsta565
yes i know it would be some work, i know someone who did it in there monte, but can someone give me a list of everything, and if i should go with the series 1 or 2? like would i need different radiator..etc..? like i said i was offered a buick with i believe is the series 1 in it, its a 95, has 150k supercharger was rebuilt 10k miles ago, my 3100 has almost 200k on it, if theres no difference in ease i would like to go with series 2, but im not sure

kuntzie
since you have a 96 this is a very easy swap. very straight forward, get a 98-99 monte z34 harness, or ltz. plug and play, with the motor and trans from a donor car. bolts right up aswell, you will ned a tune though
White93z34
like the other people said, don't even bother with a series 1, get a series 2, much easier (and better) swap.
gregsta565
do i need a "98-99 monte z34 harness, or ltz", or could i use the harness from the 3800 that i get, leaning torwards series 2 now lol
mfewtrail
do i need a "98-99 monte z34 harness, or ltz", or could i use the harness from the 3800 that i get, leaning torwards series 2 now lol You don't "need" the 98-99 Monte/Lumina 3800 V6 harness, but IT will make things a lot easier since you won't have to do a lot of wire swapping/rewiring. If you need one of these harnesses, post a "want to buy" ad in the appropriate for sale section and I'm sure someone would be able to find you one at a reasonable price. Go with the series II or III You don't want to do this if it is your only car.... Part B is what stopped me about halfway through the project to go back to a 3.4 DOHC. In all honesty, it is way easier and way cheaper to get far more performance out of a Camaro or Firebird.
