ZeeQuick
Doing a tune up on my "new" Regal tomorrow. 160,000 miles on it. Doing transmission fluid, oil change, fuel system cleaner, and probably spark plugs. Anything special that you guys recommend specifically for the 3800 Supercharged motor. -Will just regular ATF suffice for the tranny? -I was thinking of Castrol High Mileage for the oil, or just regular Castrol GTX with a Delco filter. -Spark plugs?? I usually run NGK TR55 plugs in my GTO. Fuel System Cleaner? Maybe just dump some seafoam in the tank?
Night Fury
You don't need high mileage oil, and for the Delco filter, make sure it isn't the e-core crap.
ZeeQuick
You know I had no idea about any of that e-core stuff. Never saw the topic come up on the GTO board. Looks like some people aren't such big fans of it. Guess I'll pick up a Wix or Mobil 1 filter maybe.

RobertISaar
run some seafoam through the brake booster as well.
ZeeQuick
I've always been a little wary of running seafoam through the motor like that.....I've heard stories of O2 sensors getting fouled up....and I'd certainly have to replace the plugs after doing that right?
RobertISaar
i've done it upwards of 10 times.... and i have yet to replace 1 O2 sensor, or plugs... seafoam won't junk parts.... unless you get overanxious and pour the whole can through the line in about 3 seconds... i'm not poiting fingers, but that's a really high risk of hydrolocking the motor. MonteCarloChick
Seafoam's been around for a loooong time. Use it. If shit gets fouled, that means it needed to be fixed anyways.

RobertISaar
change pcv valve Really? definitely. a malfunctioning PCV can suck a lot of oil into the intake.
ZeeQuick
Champion PCV valve from Autozone suffice?
RobertISaar
Champion PCV valve from Autozone suffice? should be fine. anything is better than nothing, or something malfunctioning.
ZeeQuick
What about transmission fluid and plugs? I see a few guys just use the Autolite Copper plugs on the supercharged motors. Wires were replaced once already so I'm not going to worry about those. What gap on the plugs do you guys run?
RobertISaar
Dexron VI tranny fluid for best results... i don't know how 3.8s respond to non-factory plugs though.
sloick
use autolite 605 plugs, factory gap should be fine.
3pt1lumina
I just put AC Delco plugs/wires in the Monte... Also did a de-carb, throttle body service, injector service, Quaker State high mileage oil, Purolator filter, PCV valve, and Dayco serpentine belt. Come spring, I want to do a coolant flush and a tranny service... but they both seem really clean so I will leave it go for now. The other stuff I doubt was done in 125k. I usually do the above every 50-60k on all of my cars.
swift13
may wanna think about changing the fuel filter if you havent already i've done it upwards of 10 times.... and i have yet to replace 1 O2 sensor, or plugs... seafoam won't junk parts.... unless you get overanxious and pour the whole can through the line in about 3 seconds... i'm not poiting fingers, but that's a really high risk of hydrolocking the motor. i remember that thread!!! ZeeQuick
Picked up a PCV valve, 5 quarts of Mobil 5000 oil (5W30), oil filter, tranny filter and gasket, and 8 quarts of Valvoline ATF. I guess these transmissions take almost 8 quarts of fluid?? Also bought some Seafoam, but I think I'm just going to stick to pouring it in the gas tank. Needs a rear valve cover gasket, but the only one Autozone had was 54.00, have to order one of the cheaper ones. I'm gonna pull some plugs tomorrow to see what they look like, guy said he had those done last year. If they look rough I'll take care of those when I do the rear gasket. Thanks for all the advice so far guys!
Crazy K
if the plugs are Bosch... replace em.
1990lumina
Don't cheap out on the gaskets either or you'll be doing them again next year.
RobertISaar
yes, these trannies use lots of fluid: and it's a good thing. i just did a fluid and filter change for the in-laws chrysler van... ~5 quarts, and you could tell it's not going to last a whole lot longer...
