abromc454jive
So I went out of state for the weekend... and today on my way home I had an issue. When I started my car this morning it kind of stuttered for a second... like it paused and did nothing then started. I stopped at a rest stop and then got back in the car and it wouldn’t start. It didn’t click or make any noise... all the lights/electronics were working though. I kept trying to start it and it wouldn’t do anything... let it sit for about 45 mins and tried starting it and it acted like it still didn’t want to start... then all of a sudden it started. I drove it home the remaining 290 miles with no issues... I just didn’t turn it off the rest of the trip. When I got home I turned it off then tried to start it right back up and it wouldn’t start again. It felt like it was shifting weird the closer I got to home... but it could have just been me being paranoid. Any ideas? Starter? Alternator? jrcuttymann
First thing I would do is remove battery cables from battery and clean both posts and the cable terminals. Cars today can have a thin layer of corrosion form on the battery terminals and cause a no start problem. Everything else in car may work but car won't start. It is a cheap fix and it won't hurt either way. After cleaning a light coat of vaseline will keep corrosion at bay and prevent problem from returning. SigEpCutlass
The easiest thing to do may to be to pull the starter and take it to the parts store to be tested.
Andrew
it may be the starter on the way out. Next time it wont start, hit the starter with a hammer a couple times. If that does the trick, replace it.
1990lumina
Does the solenoid click at all, or just nothing at all when you try? Maybe you just have loose connections to the battery or at the starter. Check your grounds and aux. postive terminal as well that may have something to do wit hthe shifting.. RZB1992
Sorry if you meant this by saying it wasn't making any noise or clicking or anything, but was it cranking at all? Sounds like the same problem I was having with my Intrigue last week. Crank shaft positioning sensor went bad - would crank but was hesitant to start for at least six seconds of trying each time. This could be a little too advanced so deffinitely check in with the battery connection first.
abromc454jive
Turns out it was just the battery... oops. The dealer wanted $150 for a new one... I caused a stink because I bought the car a month ago... so they gave it to me for $80 installed... not bad for a AC Delco battery... and it gets dark so early I didn't feel like doing it myself anyways. But they want $480 for a front hub bearing... not much cheaper elsewhere I've called... wonderful.
RZB1992
Try Autozone, or better Advance Auto. I've needed to replace both front ones and they were $98 a pop and come with a one year warrenty on em.
