DavidHowell3633
This is a 94 Cutlass 3100. It's been running like a top for several months. We pulled away from a stop sign and it sounded like it was running on 4 cylinders. I could let off the throttle feathering it and it would smooth out as if all 6 were firing. I opened the hood and noticed wet oil on the base of the egr. I was able to make it back to my garage- about 40 miles. I pulled the egr valve and there's evidence of coolant, also. I have not had to add coolant so far. I swapped a spare egr and test drove it. At first. it ran well. Then, began to exhibit the same fouled plug symptoms. I pulled that egr and only noticed coolant. All 6 plugs are dry. Even when it was sputtering under slight acceleration, it would later idle smoothly as usual. What would you suspect? Thanks, David
89SupremeCutty
i had the same problem in my 98 lumina with coolant in the egr. your lower intake gasket needs to be replaced.
DavidHowell3633
Update: I replaced the lower intake gaskets (metal Felpro) with new metal Felpro's as well as the uppers. The old gaskets were ok. I noticed the bolt torque wasn't what it should have been. I used red threadlocker this time- not blue. The egr intake passage was clogged and I've opened that back up and installed a jy egr. I burped the cooling system and took it for a test drive. Driving like an old man it was ok. But, the sputtering is still there so I am assuming I had two issues and now left with the sputtering. It actually didn't start sputtering until I tried my first kickdown for passing gear. As long as there's plenty of vacuum it's smooth. When I apply more gas it acts as if it's out of time or running on 4 cylinders. Now, it's back in the garage and just spent an hour reading threads to no avail- so far. I changed my AC plugs to new AC plugs and cleaned all the sparkplug wire connectors as well as coil connectors. The battery is a year old. Any ideas are appreciated. swift13
when you changed the lim did you notice any coolant in the oil? if you did did you flush it out? egr tube may be clogged. or could be a sensor issue. tps, iac.... DavidHowell3633
No, I must have caught it early. There seems to be no water in the oil. The level is unchanged and does not appear contaminated.
BXX
Get a scantool that will work on it.. Pull codes.. Not all codes turn on the SES light, and some might be pending/immature Sounds like a failing coil/ICM or a plug wire going bad.. It may be slightly arching out which makes itself more obvious under higher loads.
DavidHowell3633
I have an Autoxray Code Scout, but it is almost useless, at least on mine. I think I'll take the ICM to AutoZone and see how it tests out. Thanks
DavidHowell3633
It was not the ICM. It was a coil. Zero resistance. I should have checked it earlier. Thanks for your advice.
