arod0079
my pops has a 2001 Impala with the 3400 in it. He needs to change out the tensioner pulley because it is making noises. Are there any tricks to do this or is it a pretty straight forward job to take care of?
RobertISaar
if it's like my 3100, he needs a wrench to get tension off of it, slip the belt off, then just unscrew the one bolt holding it in.... and don't replace just the pulley, replace the tensioner as well... that's something i made the mistake of. arod0079
I hear ya. I have to head out and look at it today so i can get more of an idea what I'm most likely to be dealing with.
SigEpCutlass
You're probably going to need a braker bar to get the tensioner & the pulley off. Other than that, the replacement is very straight forward. Make sure to replace both the belt and the tensioner while you're at it.
Crazy K
the tensioner *should* be the same as used on gm 60degreev6s since 88, excluding the 3.4 dohc. take the bad one to a j/y with you and get a good one for about $20. the ones on 93 and earlier 3.1/2.8s seem to be better quality. that said, most come off using a 3/8 ratchet to release tension, and then a single bolt (13mm usually) holds in on the car.
