carkhz316
....on my (now my little brother's) '91 euro (3.1). Everything has been fine. He went to start it Saturday morning. Nobody home. (as in it cranks and cranks...nothing). Sunday I did the normal tests. Fuel pressure is there (pump works, duh) No spark. No raw fuel smell. Checked crank sensor. Was getting ~1 V AC while cranking, and the frequency was a little low, like 15-20 hz. BUT, the resistance is like ~13-15 M ohms (NOTE MEGA/ Million ohms. Way too much) SO, gotta replace that bastard I guess. I know you guys have done it. And as embarrassed as I am to admit, I haven't replaced it on this car before. I know its on the back side of the block, and it's held in with a clip and a little (13mm??? bolt). What are your secrets? I know I'll have to drop the rear of the cradle down. But the biggest hurdle for me is that I don't have access to a lift right now. My best shot is my cherry picker/ jacks and jack stands. Give me your tips and suggestions guys. Thanks in advance!!!! tunerlover3
The back side of the block? Its on the right side behind the harmonic balancer.
White93z34
there is a thread on this in the FAQ section that covers it fairly well. in the past I have had success changing 2.8/3.1 CPS by reaching down under the alternator and going by feel. IIRC a 8mm bolt holds it in place, so long as it is not jammed in the block its pretty easy to change. having small hands and skinny arms helps. You think it'd be easier that way than dropping the cradle and crawling underneath. Also, forgot about the FAQ. I remember now that there is one. Oops. GOT2B GM
3.1 MPFI with an auto you should be able to access it from the bottom. I replaced the crank sensor on my 90 TGP from the bottom without diassembling anything. Be careful not to break it off in the block, they get brittle with age. carkhz316
Yeah, I ended up ratchet-strappin the crap outta the engine (after undoing the dogbones) I know someone it's been mentioned before about undoing the lower mounts, but I didn't. I got plenty of room, like 5-6 inches worth just yanking it forward. Anyway, After soaking it in carb cleaner, I tried grabbing it and instantly snapped the little mounting tang off (factory plastic: suckorz. New replacement: metal, FTW!) After some hasseling with a screwdriver in an attempt to pry it up, and a needle nose, I finally grabbed a channel lock pliers, and grabbed it precisely and gave a a tug and she popped right out. WHEW, what a relief. Sure enough, there was a nice hairline crack going down it. Put the new one in, and she fired right up. WOOT! Thanks again guys!! Be careful not to break it off in the block, they get brittle with age. 91 and up frames have the rear provision for the 3.4, and lack easy clearance, even if they have the 3.1. the metal tabbed sensors seem to have been introduced around 93... but the partr is the same part, but with a superior design. I also coat the complete sensor with silicone/dielectric grease to prevent "coking" where carbon packs in and gets the sensor stuck while oil promotes plastic decay.
