90Cutlass3.1 Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 Just trying to get an idea of how many peeps *if any* need/want NEW plastic parts for their rides that don`t want crappy ass junk yard pieces that they have to spend hours on cleaning up and repairing. I know I need a few for my 90 Cutty and was thinking of casting some molds to thermo-form them. Quote
Garrett Powered Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 there was some people interested in throttle body clips for the 2.8/3.1. mostly the turbo guys, if you can make plastic parts. they are hard to find even in the junkyard. Quote
oscar_wilde Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 It certainly wouldn't hurt at all to have the molds in storage somewhere for later days. It is people like you that make car restoration in twenty plus years significantly easier. Quote
Twenty Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 Most of my car's still good, but it would be worth having the ability to reproduce parts later on, as oscar_wilde said. There are already multiple parts for mine that aren't produced anymore, making restoring it harder. Quote
tdvs Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 Guess it depends on what interior parts you'd consider reproducing, and for which car or cars. Our w-bodies are getting rare. The older they get, the more used up they will be making good used parts even harder to find. The trick is to figure out which parts would be the most in demand for the longest peroid of time to make you're efforts worth while. Quote

Like I broke some plastic thing and I gorilla glued it back together. After, Looking and Looking for one that wasn't already broken. Quote
RobertISaar Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 Our w-bodies are getting rare. overstatement of the decade. W's are far from rare, but a W in great condition is kind of tough depending on year. most 1st gens are rotted/busted by now, still a few good 1.5s out there and most 2 and 3 gen W aren't in bad condition. Twenty Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 Our w-bodies are getting rare. most 1st gens are rotted/busted by now Tell me about it. There are some parts I want that are really hard to get my hands on. Short of finding a well-maintained car to use for parts, there aren't many options. Quote
90Cutlass3.1 Posted October 19, 2009 Author Report Posted October 19, 2009 I was mainly thinking of small parts to start with. Like the console, maybe moving on to the dash bezel. Door posts and so on. Where I work we make plastic interiors for aircraft restoration, so I have access to make practically any plastic, acrylic and fiberglass part. I am the supervisor of our fiberglass division and would like to move into carbon fiber someday. I think a cowl induction carbon fiber hood for my cutty would be sick! If you would list the part(s) you want/need I can get an idea of what everyone wants/needs, to see what the demand would be, It doesn`t cost any more to make a mold for 1000 parts than it does for 1 LOL. Quote
Galaxie500XL Posted October 19, 2009 Report Posted October 19, 2009 I can think of a couple of pieces, like decent console lid tops for 95-97 Cutlasses...or,in the case of my convertible, pillar trim (one of mine the previous owner attached with an ugly Phillips screw)... For that matter, how about custom console tops that would accomodate a trip computer, or DIC? It burns me that Olds didn't offer a trip computer in my '95 Cutlass...or how about a custom piece that would allow for an HUD in cars not already equipped? Just thinking out loud here, but if you have the means to make them, there might be enough interest. Quote
carkhz316 Posted October 19, 2009 Report Posted October 19, 2009 Gauge pod pillars for pretty much any of our cars (cough cough cough Monte and 1g lumi. Quote
Twenty Posted October 19, 2009 Report Posted October 19, 2009 The flip-out cupholders in Gen 1 GP sedans (Coupes too? I don't know) can break. Mine did years back, if it goes again it may be harder to replace. Quote
90Cutlass3.1 Posted October 20, 2009 Author Report Posted October 20, 2009 Yea the flip out cup holders are def cheaply made. That would be one item I would want just for my own ride, even if no one else did. Pillers w/ guage mod wouldnt be to bad to make either. Custom console tops, hmmmm I like that idea. keep em coming. WhatTheFehl Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 Sorry to bring up an older topic but: The ring that holds the seatbelt in the door on the top, an armrest lid hinge that won't break as easily... and a new radio bezel that isn't covered in rubberized shit. Quote
anton74 Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 The bezel around the radio, door switch bezels, armrest lid for 1st gen GP Quote
