electronic variable orifice, also know as variable assist power steering...

makes turning at low speeds easy, then the faster you go the more the orifice restricts, making more effort required to turn the wheel.

stability thing from what i can tell...

The proper term for it is Variable Effort Steering..

And IIRC only LQ1s got it offered..

INCORRECT!

the LQ1 part car I chopped up had it. it now resides in my 95 sedan. it is PIMP... but it is also a bonafide 2.25 turn ratio rack (LQ1 cars could have had it, but only with the NV7 option)... easy and FAST steering all the time!

my car has it and the RPO code for it is NV7

correct:

NV7 STEERING, POWER, VARIABLE EFFORT

so thats a 96 3100 car that has it...

i've seen a 95 GTP thats had it as well...

Remember, any 95+ car with ABs could have it. that is what the phantom read plug near the alternator is for on the 3100.

Also, at the base of the column there is another connector, which is for a sensor that detects the steering wheel turning.

I love my magnasteer.

It's known as Magnasteer at least in the Cutlass brochure I have.

With that said. I've only seen it on a 95 3.4 cars. I disagree with Ken on both the 2.25 ratio and the magnasteer being offered on other model years. I've also never seen it in a Lumina/MC.

Drive my car! It is a bonafide obd1.5 and up rack with 2.25 ratio rack.

How can you tell? No pressure sensor, and lock to lock is 2.25 turns. Bob tested it. The parts catalog does NOT list the steering ratios of the NV7 racks, presumably because there was only one NV7 rack....

I have not seen another NV7 car in the yards as of recent, so I have not been able to analyze another rack.

Can ANYONE ELSE count the number of turns lock to lock on their own NV7 equipped car for us???
