Back to Gen 3 M90

Well I finally finished the job of swapping back to my Gen 3 M90 and stock TB from the Gen V/ N* TB. The car runs noticably better now suprisingly. I cleaned my origonal L67 LIM , the TB and got all the nasty gunk out from the inlet of my Gen 3 b4 i put them on. I took my dremel and polished the inside of the TB, as well as smothed out the inlet to the Gen 3.........and also polished the surface of the LIM and bottom of the blower.

Mostly went well with a few minor problems. First off.....i had a hell of a time getting the press on pulley off my Gen 3 so that I could swap over the ZZP MPS from the Gen V........what shold have taken 45 minutes total took me nearly 3 damn hours!!!

The 2nd problem I had was my dumb ass dropped one of the fuel rail studs down into Cyl #5. I was furious at this point. I thought that I would have to strip the damn thing down to the head. Luckily a local GP member fro the local forum let me borrow his telescopic magnet wich worked perfictly and got the bolt out 1st try. That was a ton off my shoulders.

But I got everything bolted back up....all the lines / harnesses connected. completely flushed the block/coolant res. and everything and put all new coolant in, put my 180 T-stat back in and loaded my old DHP 1.0 Tune back onto the PCM. Car runs perfictly......pulls like a bat out of hell. I wish it ran like this for the meet in Dayton last month. Night and day difference. My only bug that I have to work out tomorrow is to re-adjust the cruise cable to the throttle body.....it was adjusted shorter to accomidate for the N* when it was hooked up to that. It's too short for my TB and makes the car idle at 2800RPM's so it's unhooked til i adjust it tomorrow. (It's a 30 second deal).

That is all.

whats up with the Gen V?

Could not get the car to run right...........I figured out why i might have been gettign that burst knock.....the EGR bracket was loose the entire time. And it ran even worse agter the N* was installed....but when i took that off the Gen V last night 3 of the 4 bolts were loose and there wasnt even RTV around the whole thing. The car is running alot better now. I'm trading the Gen V for a Ram air hood.

This is the only photo i snapped the other night while doing the swap......i was too busy to take more. I failed to show my nice polish job of the inside of the L67 TB..........you can see the Gen V sitting there after i took it off....with the N* still attached. Blowers and blower parts scattered all across my garage floor.

not gunna lie..........i actually miss the whine of the Gen 3......i kinda like it better. The Gen V has a nice whine to it too. I like the WOT whine of the Gen 3 better, and the low pitch lower RPM whine of the Gen V better. All in all i'm happy with going back to Gen 3 and stock L67 parts.....less headaches, runs better.

I wonder if that could have been an issue a PCM cal could have fixed.

Had it wideband tuned twice with the Gen V/N* setup.........still did not run anywhere near right.

Well, if TB bolts were loose, that's probably the bulk of the runability problem.

And the EGR bracket was loose......and IIRC the rear knock sensor is close to that in the rear of the motor........probably giving me my false burst knock. But ya know what........its already pout back together w/ the Gen 3. I'm happy w/ it now. I'm not looken for a low 12 second car. The only real benefit to having a Gen V is if yer doing some serious modding. If i do decide to go a tad further next year w/ modding i can just unbolt my Gen 3 and port the outlet out some. no biggie. To be perfictly honest.......i had a 160* drilled T-stat w/ the Gen V setup.......and i could not even touch that blower after turning the car off w/o practically burning my hand. I now am back to my 180* non drilled......and i can hold my hand on my Gen 3 after turning the car off. That Gen V heated up way too much for some reason........probably part of my problem........there were multiple problems........and like i said i'm just happy w/ the way this car runs now.

Not to mension my PB on the Gen 3 is a 13.471 PB for the Gen V is 13.341............is that really worth it????
