TIE1-ON
My 02 Grand Prix the other day just died while in traffic. I would try to restart it and then put it in gear and it would die. After a few tries it finally started, but if at a light or at idle it would just die. Took it to the dealer and it wasn't throwing any codes, but they tapped on the MAF while it was idling and it would die. They replaced the MAF sensor and so far so good. So, if anyone has a similar issue with their W-body dying then maybe look at the MAF sensor. Mine went out at 116,000 miles.
4door Intl
So, where is the MAF sensor on the 3.1? I've seen it mounted along the air intake, after the air cleaner box and before the throttle body on the 3100's but such a place doesn't exist as far as i know on the 3.1... 4door Intl
Well what does it have in its place? And, does it fail as commonly as the 3100's MAF?
xtremerevolution
Well what does it have in its place? And, does it fail as commonly as the 3100's MAF? Yours should have a MAP (manifold absolute pressure), instead of MAF sensor (mass air flow).
GP1138
The only OBDI W-Body with a MAF is the old 2.8 in '88 - they had a can-style intake and a MAF sensor, which turned out to not work very well, hence the quick switchover to MAP sensor and box-style intake. In '96 when they switched to OBDII they re-jiggered the MAF to work with it. I can't remember, but I think 3.4L cars had the MAF sensor too on OBD 1.5. RobertISaar
the 3.8s didn't use MAFs?
GP1138
the 3.8s didn't use MAFs? I may have misspoken, I'm not sure about the 3.8's honestly.

xtremerevolution
My 95 3800 has a MAF, but that's all I can speak for.
RobertISaar
My 95 3800 has a MAF, but that's all I can speak for. i don't think i've ever seen a 3.8 without one(factory ayways), going back to 1984 at least... so as far as i'm concerned, all fuel injected 3.8s have them... Radnsmash
My 3800 II has one(Fucker died this year)
RobertISaar
(Fucker died this year) (no comment) (on second though) i don't like MAFs... they seem like band-aid approaches to actually hashing out VE tables... its not that tough...
