douellette Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 when i get on the gas (more than about 50%), it kind of feels like its surging with power in and out. a couple of times it basically floored it to pass someone, and it felt like it had a loss of power and then all of a sudden it felt like it gained it back and then it lost it again. i know the lower intake gasket is leaking coolant. what could be causing this? i hope its not the fuel pump cuz i just just dropped the tank to replace the tank. 1990lumina Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 Sure you aren't just feeling the car downshift, speed up then have the torque converter lock up (will drop 300rpm or so) then continue to speed up again until OD Quote
94 olds vert Posted October 3, 2009 Report Posted October 3, 2009 my dad had this problem with his f-150. Check the pcv and anything connected to it. All it takes is one small hole to make your engine surge. My dads truck also surged when it was idling you hear it. Quote
bodeen2007 Posted October 4, 2009 Report Posted October 4, 2009 my car was doing that it ended up being a vacuum line so i just replaced them all . no more surge Quote
douellette Posted October 4, 2009 Author Report Posted October 4, 2009 my car was doing that it ended up being a vacuum line so i just replaced them all . no more surge do you think it would still be that even though it only does it on hard throttle? Quote
bodeen2007 Posted October 4, 2009 Report Posted October 4, 2009 do you think it would still be that even though it only does it on hard throttle? that is how mine started then it got to the point where it would do it at part half and full throttle . It could be something else i'm just letting u know what i went through. Quote
douellette Posted October 4, 2009 Author Report Posted October 4, 2009 oooh. does anyone think the leaking lower intake gasket would cause that? Quote
Andrew Posted October 4, 2009 Report Posted October 4, 2009 its very possible if its sucking in coolant. also could be the injectors. then tend to do this while under load, when they start to die. Quote
douellette Posted October 4, 2009 Author Report Posted October 4, 2009 oh boy....another expensive part haha Quote
jeremy Posted October 4, 2009 Report Posted October 4, 2009 oh boy....another expensive part haha find a cheap low mileage 3400 and swap it in..... Quote
douellette Posted October 4, 2009 Author Report Posted October 4, 2009 haha, an engine is out of my price range. Quote
Night Fury Posted October 4, 2009 Report Posted October 4, 2009 haha, an engine is out of my price range. Don't haha, It would be the cheaper option in the long run! Quote
89SupremeCutty Posted October 4, 2009 Report Posted October 4, 2009 when was the last time plugs and wires were changed? my lumina was doing the same thing and it would do it randomly. Quote
douellette Posted October 4, 2009 Author Report Posted October 4, 2009 they were replaced right before i bought the car about 3 or 4 months ago. Quote
jeremy Posted October 4, 2009 Report Posted October 4, 2009 haha, an engine is out of my price range. Don't haha, It would be the cheaper option in the long run! seriously......that is why I suggested a 3400....as direct swap as there would be and they can normally be found complete in good running condition for $300-500 Quote
douellette Posted October 4, 2009 Author Report Posted October 4, 2009 can the engine be pulled out the top? because i dont have a lift and im not going to pay someone to put it in. Quote
RobertISaar Posted October 4, 2009 Report Posted October 4, 2009 if you pull the hood, its fairly easy to go from the top... Quote
PROTESTtheHERO Posted October 4, 2009 Report Posted October 4, 2009 my car was surging when it needed an ECM, also when it needed a TPS. both are pretty heafty fixes as both of them cost me $320 together. Quote
RobertISaar Posted October 4, 2009 Report Posted October 4, 2009 you paid 320 for a TPS and ECM? you got raped. Quote
douellette Posted October 4, 2009 Author Report Posted October 4, 2009 you paid 320 for a TPS and ECM? you got raped. yeah, tps you just swap the part and the pcm isnt that hard, just may have to be flashed by the dealer. Quote

PROTESTtheHERO Posted October 4, 2009 Report Posted October 4, 2009 yeah i got pretty fucked off of that but i couldnt get an ecm fast enough cuz i needed my car to get to school. so i bit the bullet and forked out $220 (that hurt a lot) but its remanned. the stupid fuckin TPS was $93 at crappy tire and thats the best i could find at that time, and again i needed it to pass my etest cuz i was on my second 10 day temp sticker and then id be outta luck for a year. btw these are canadian prices. my future clusterfucks will hopefully give me some notice before just crappin out on me so i have time to shop around and hopefully not have to bend over again.. ..
